Good evening loonyzoner's!

After a year in the non LR wilderness having sold my old L-Series hippo, we have finally bought ourselves a tasty td4 hse. It goes so much better than my old xdi and with all the toys its a great piece of kit.
Going to give it an epic service and get tinkering over the next couple of weeks!
Good to see some old names still around on here,

all the best,

Den:)

nice. I sold my l-series over a year ago, back with the blue oval for now. will get a defender when i have somewhere to keep it safe away from the theives. In the mean time i am enjoying totally trouble free motoring

HSE, posh git! Condition, mileage, history etc? is it a good one or a 'project'?

Metallic black, 05 plate 70k miles in absolutely pristine condition, the one owner before us had really looked after it-its almost as new.
Full LR service history new set of michelin latitudes all round, full leather, sat nav etc etc.
We decided if we were going to get one lets do it properly, spend some extra pennies and not be wanting for anything else.
Going to change all the oils (engine, brake, ird, diff, gearbox, PSF), filters, do the crankcase breather mod and sort the EGR out.
Looking forward to sorting it out and driving it as much as possible before i go away with work in march :frown:
Any other suggestions for must do bits to keep it sweet?

If you really intend to keep it and keep it sweet consider a recon VCU, £300 buys you happy transmission for another 70k.

Chaser, I did consider this, done all the other usual checks (lock tightness, tip ex, jacked wheel) and it seems fine for now, will keep an eye on it and if it starts to tighten up then I will definetly indulge.
Any suggestions on where to buy from? Bell engineering still reccomended?

P.S. 2x hippos I went to look at when I was car hunting were in mondo mode, ird blanked no props etc.Belonged to a dealer and a private seller who I believe both genuinely didnt know! Their faces as I explained what that meant!...

if you are going to chage the oil in the IRD get a socket 18mm with flat sides NOT the multi sided one the stud gets tight and a slightest slip and it rounds of very easy the first time i did it I had to weld a half inch drive to it and get it out that way because some one had rounded it I checked the oil yesterday in the ird and noticed it seems as though it is made of a soft metal hope this helps

When I was looking to buy another FL1, which I didn't as it turns out, I had decided whatever I bought I would change the VCU so that I could sit back and enjoy the car without being paranoid about the unknown level of strain on the transmission. I'd just decided all this regular and largely inconclusive testing wasn't for me. I'd rather make a decision based on mileage.

Bell are still the people for replacement VCUs, a good product and service by all accounts.

Mondo FL1s are everywhere now, people trading them in to garages, sales pitches or sale via auction. I feel sorry for the unsuspecting buyers but it's also a worry for unaware traders as well. Bell also do 2 wheel drive IRDs, i'm not a fan of these because they can't be visually distinguished from a proper IRD owing to the rear prop remaining in place. Buyer beware!
