Hello, I previously owned a 1974 SWB diesel series 3. I had to sell 4 years ago, & now have the funds (albeit limited) to buy again. I have been offered a H reg Defender 90 with the 2.5 turbo diesel engine (the engine that a lot have had problems with). That said, the local guy who owns it works as a Land Rover mechanic (he's upgrading to a 200 tdi) He is only the second owner & it has done 67,000 documented miles from new. It has 5 speed box & power steering. Truck cab with Ifor Williams aluminium canopy at back. It will have 12 mths MOT. Bulkhead is good. Chassis never welded but about to have weld for first time on rear cross member. I think the engine has been well looked after & never really driven above 45 mph for most of its life. I have been offered it for £2,500 & wondered if you guys thought this was a fair price & worth the 'risk' on the 2.5 engine ? We would literally only do 1,000 - 1,500 miles per year (no motorways etc....). Any advice much appreciated. Kind regards, Tim

I think that sounds OK to me. Even if the engine does pack in (which is unlikely as they are pretty good engines as long as they have been maintained) you could always buy a rotten Discovery and do an engine swap.

If it's as good as you say it is then do it.

But...

Sounds fair to me! And as long as serviced and used for towing heavy trailers engine should last for a long time!
