Well, looks pretty simple. Looks in fact, just like a rheostat. The double-ring presumably just doubled the effective length making it somewhat more sensitive to movement. Knowing Land Rover the track is probably about 1 molecule thick and will vaporise above 40C but other than that it should be fairly bullet-proof excepting any dirt in there.

If it were that simple, I'd be making them by now, the double track actually reduces sensitivity.
The track is actually quite good quality, just the wrong type of device IMO.
