I must be very fortunate as my o ring change went without any hitches :5bparty:
Took me about 6 hours in total, over 2 days.

My best tip to anyone else doing this job is do not drain all the coolant out, unless its due a change.
I had fresh antifreeze in mine so i didnt want to loose it ;)
All i did was undo the two heater matrix pipes going through/to the bulkhead, and quickly plugged them to prevent any loss.
When i came to releasing the o rings from the matrix, i just had a minimal amount of fluid come out which was easily soaked up.

Research was the key to this job, everything i needed to know was on this site. Links and all.:D

I was so lucky in that the phillips screw that releases the o ring bracket, easily came undone with the right screwdriver.

I had read that the o rings were 22mm x 2.5mm, but i could only get 22mm x 3mm. Only slightly bigger but harder to reassemble,i decided to place them in hot water first. Then coated the oriface and rings in fairy liquid before clamping them back in.
Well it worked for me :)

Although i did take out the radio and hevac unit, in reality i didnt gain anything by doing so.

All my access and viewing was done from under the steering wheel area, also where the speedo was taken out and from where the right had centre console cover was.

Oh and i also cut the hevac pipe as in certain articles on here, made life a lot easier !

My old o rings had gone flat, and one was split. The other split as i took it out !!

Hopefully theres a couple pics bellow this i took.

Hope this helps someone else when their time comes to do this job :welcome2:

good job! might be even more helpful (for lazy gits like me!) if you wouldn't mind posting all the links to the threads / articles you found useful? i mean since you've already done the work...

Great site as well.
Heater Core O-Ring Replacement

Got to change my engine over the next week or so, looking for jobs that will need doing over the next few months that I should do while the engine is out, would there be any real advantage to change the rings while the engine is out or is the only gain the fact that the water will be out and the heater hoses disconected from the engine side already? if these are the only gains I will leave the rings for another day but don't want to miss a chance if it will make a big time saving later on!

Steve

As you say, the only advantage to the job is that your coolant will be drained.
The majority of the work is done inside the cabin,so unless you want to do it for peace of mind, then i'd leave it til it leaks ;)

The other way of looking at it is, if changing the o rings turns into a nightmare due to rounding off the screw e.t.c. Then now is the time to do it whilst its off the road, as you might have to take out the dash assembly to drill out the screw head at the o ring joint !!

I was lucky in that i changed mine with no problems, others on here have had a right struggle.

Hope that helps :D
