heated rear window

hi I can't run my engine at the moment as its in bits so working through my electrical problems so can someone tell me if the engine has to be running for heated rear Window to work as on mine with just the ignition on the heated rear Window switch does not illuminate .

it will not work if the window is not in the up position but will work without the engine running
