Head removal and timing pins

I am 2/3rds into removing my cylinder head. am at the stage where the cam timing pin is in. nips under car to fit flywheel pin and discover there is no bolt in the hole, turns out the reason is the threads are jiggered. try as you do cant get bottom timing pin in. is it too risky to carry on without bottom pin or should I wait till Tuesday and buy a thread tap.

You don't need the pin for head removal only belt change.
Guessing 200/300 TDI.???

Always the way....stuff always goes wrong for me on a bank holiday as well.
Do you know the thread size? It's 1/4 bsp I think on early models, don't know about td5.

IF ? I'm correct then you don't need any timing pins for the td5 it;s just done on the cam timing at the front of the head when you have the rocker top off !

you need to locate both cam and crank
