Okay I no it's been covered before but could not find the link. My question is

We have a 2000 1.8 Freelander it had its engine replaced at 40,000 (in 2003) by Land rover agent with genuine Land rover engine. The thermostat was moved at the same time. It appears to be using about a cup full of water each month, apart from that it's running brilliant. Questions

1) When did land rover start fitting the improved gasket?
2) Is it the gasket I have noticed that the windscreen mists up on passenger side may be heater matrix has gone any ideas on how we can check if it's gasket or not ?.

If it's the head gasket it's going to be replaced by a Jap 4x4

they replaced HG with MLS and new rail in Jan 2006. Multiple HGF is common:(.

it is likely to be heater matrix - feel around under heater in centre console from passenger side - it is a common fault - but is circa 8 hours and dash removal job to fix.

Inspect in around the heater matrix/centre console for leaks.

Change the coolant cap, probably a dodgey valve, giving minimal coolant loss.
