Hi all, just joined the site, alot of very good info on the forums, just bought a 99 Freelander XEi, there's one problem, the HDC light (amber) stays on, all others extinguish, i've checked under the gaiter, gave it a clean with WD40, looks fine. when i operate the HDC swith on the gear stick the green light doesn't come on therefore i presume its not working, i'm lost, please help.

:welcome2:

probably the 'brake light switch'.

use the search at the top of the thread list page

Had a look at the brake light switch, looks ok and the brake lights are working fine, never the less i've ordered a new part form LR (£6.72), will fit it on Wednesday and see if it knocks the light off, fingers crossed. If it doesn't i'll be scratching my head again.

Well, new brake light switch went in and had no effect, completely baffled. looks like i'm going to have to get it in the garage, i've ran out of ideas?
Anybody shed any light?

Check reverse gear and first gear switches and electrical curciuts....

Also the brake light relay in the passenger compartment fuse box

Sorry, just read your first post again, gear switches more likely as your HDC doesn't go green

Where is the relay for the HDC on the freelander, the manual just says it's in the engine compartment, anyone shed any light...

Not fixed yet, I've changed the Brake light switch, checked the Reverse/1st Gear switches, all fuses and relays, HDC amber light is still on, got one of my mates looking at it tomorrow (auto electrician), maybe he can sort it before I admit defeat and take it to the experts.

Sticking throttle or not enough free play in the throttle cable can be the cause on 1.8s. Something to do with implausible signal from pedal sensors. :)

Probably not that then, just thought I'd mention it in case it rang any bells.
Throttle cable can be slackened easy enough but the stepper on the throttle body has to be set with Testbook.

Usually it is the wiring goin to the switch on the gearlever!
It breaks inside sometimes so even if it looks ok it has an internal break!!

Got the light cleared about ten days ago by an auto sparky, (gave him a tenner), been bombing around the army's off road-road circuit in Surrey using HDC etc, amber light is still off, green one comes on when its supposed to. I think next time i'll just get it put on the diagnostic machine and pinpointing the problem than chasing the problem and changing everything.
