Maybe its me but i have a haynes manual 83 to 07 90-110 defender and all of the descriptions of the dash lights show they are laid out the same but mine are not in the same order. I have been struggling with a rogue light when i turn on the heated rear screen but i think now its because the lamps are laid out differently to what they should be. anyone have a diagram that shows the dash lamps in the right order. photo shown.

round circle with squares round the edge and a thermometer in the middle, someone said previously that it is the light to do with the gearbox but did not think it was fitted on 96 defenders. The heated screen light does not come on when the switch is on but the screen is working. It does light up when you turn on ignition then goes off. The haynes says that the cables on the back of the heated screen light are white and green but i have white and black and white and the odd thermometer light has grey and red x 2 and white.

Second one sounds like glow plug light.
Pull the dash forward, and have a look to see if the wires have been "modified".
Get a meter and check what light gets voltage when you switch on a circuit, note it's colours then compare with the circuit diagrams.
If bodged you will have to do some re wiring to get the correct lights.
The retroanaconda link gives you what the connections should be.
