To be honest deep down it was a shame he had to use a good 110 roof.
My friend has the same attitude as you he uses a sub £20 pop up tent on a sheet of trailer board he has fixed to his roof rack, if he is stuck for space on the way home he just bins the tent.
For summer time European camping and Morocco trips I think these tents are fine. We had one cold night on the way back in Morocco when we were up in the Atlas Mountains where we all had our jackets/coats and hats on. Once inside the tent it was quiet comfortable and it kept the morning dew off. I don't know if these more expensive tents are any warmer in colder conditions. My son used the tent for some concert he went to where it poured down with rain the whole time. He said the tent kept dry over the weekend. I think if I were going to colder places like Iceland I would prefer to take the Motor Home which has central heating and can carry more wine and beers.
