Hi Chaps,

Got a small problem with the handbrake on my late eighties 200tdi converted 90 - just looking for some advice.
Handbrake works well in that it engages positively after a couple of clicks on the lever, and holds the vehicle no problem on steep inclines.
Problem is that it does not seem to want to disengage quite so willingly. If I've left the brake on for a while, I then get the juddering/thumping from the transmission as I slow down to a stop - which I'm pretty sure is symptomatic of the handbrake not being fully released. This clears after a while and things get back to normal, but I'm hesitant to use my handbrake now.
Is my problem likely to be a worn cable, worn brake shoe return springs, or something else??
Let me know what you think!

Cheers

Take the whole mechanism apart, clean, lube and check the drum and shoes for wear. Replace them if necessary.
Good for a very long time afterwards and very easy to do.

Just see you put the expander back together the right way if you take it apart or it wont work.Although if not to covered in crud a good spraying with brake cleaner while a mate moves the handbrake back and fore followed by some lub and adjustment.

Strip the drum down, took me bout an hour to get the drum off first time now 5 mins each time after.

remvoed and cleaned shoes, the bit which pushes the shoes out, this was all gunked so it didnt let the shoes go back in easily. stripped it down, regreased, tis like new now.

I found that when the drum heats up it binds a bit just with the expansion of the components, best to set the hand brake to about 4-6 clicks that way it doesnt happen

thanks for the advice chaps, sounds like a stripdown clean and lube might do the trick then! Busters photo run through will help a lot as usual!!

Silly question but did you adjust it correctly ?
release the tension on the hand brake cable and then adjust the adjuster, then retension the hand brake cable to give you the desired click ?

The reason i ask is most people with landys just move the adjuster
