Can anyone identify the tube the red arrow is pointing to?

I need to identify it so that I can replace it as it has come loose.

does it go to the cooling system? ie have water in it?

If so there is a ball valve in the plastic manifold part which gets stuck and can cause overheating of the cylinder head. Remove the ball bearing.........

But I could be wong!!!!!!

If its only come loose why not tighten it up?

It looks like a vacuum pipe to me.
Jedi the one you mean is down near the dipstick and you're right it's good to remove this pesky ball.

The reason I was planning on changing this piece out was that it came loose and was causing the car to rev to 3000 when the ignition was on (without any pedal contact).

I had it fixed using some glue and a plastic tie. However, I was informed that this would only be a temporary solution and that the tube should be replaced.

I think this advice was based on the fact that there didn't appear to be any obvious reason for the tube to have come loose (i.e. no broken connector or locking screw); and so the guy repairing it just thought it must be faulty.

If i remember rightly the tube goes to a black cylinder on the EU2 engines, yet yours is an EU3 by looking at the rocker cover. The box on the top on the right hand side will contain whatever it is going to, possibly still a black cyclinder...

Mine snapped off when i still had an original manifold but it didn't make any different to mine.

What year is your freelander?

I should explain that I used a picture of a generic k series engine, rather than an image of my own.

I have a 2003 Freelander (K series engine).
