It is in limp mode.
Try unplugging your MAF and see if it runs better.

Thanks, just tried getting the cover off the engine only to realise theres two hex nuts on there too... Just had to rummage in the garage and found a small fisher price socket set that should do the job.

In the meantime, I've taken a 1 minute video showing MAF readouts against RPM... This code reader is showing 1 'INC' codes and digging around in the menu's show's this is to do with the fuel system monitor. No idea what this means

I'm not having a good day :(

To be honest I know very little about the diesels and nowt about code readers.
I just posted one possible out of many Mad Hat Man or Sing Vogel would be the ones to ask.
Can you hear your fuel pumps working and have you checked the fuel filter

Hi LOGIKSTATE,

I'm not that well up on readers other than the one I have myself - a Scanguage2 - permanently connected.

If you unplug the MAF it should run better - if it's the MAF which is faulty - lots of low down power, because the ECU uses a default setting and thinks the temp is very low, I believe, so it overfuels.

I tend to agree that it's fuel related - how old is the pump?
When was the last filter change - air and/or fuel?

I had all filters changed at 98k(ish) with second major service (on approx 114k miles now). I'm guessing the pump is as old as the car as I don't have any details of it ever being replaced.

I've just limped to homebase and back to get a socket set... couldn't do more than about 8 mph... I shall take air cover off and disconnect MAF now and see what happens.

Congratulations on getting so far on the original pump then.

Mine failed around 82K which seems to be par for the course.

Lets see what happens with default MAF settings.

Gah! I can't even get the cover off to get to the MAF sensor. Removed all bolts and breather pipes and oil filler cap... Feels like its held on somehow around the back? Can't see or feel any clips?

Totally stumped, now rained and snowed(!?) off so have reasembled and given in for the moment...

It's turning into a saga now! :)

<sigh>

I know how you feel, mate. I haven't been out of the house all day - it's chucking it down up here in Scotsmanland.

The air-filter cover is held on by 5 of the 5mm allan-headed screws.

The 2 at the back of the engine are 'tricky' to reach - it's not so bad if you have a long reach allan key.

Have a look with a mirror.

At no point did Mr Haynes mention bolts behind the back out of sight.

Thanks for the info

Hi there, are you looking in the right section of Mr Haynes bible?

Mine is a 2004 TD4 - but all the TD4s are the same.

Just had a look - it's in Section 1B-13 item 28 - Air filter element renewal.

There is a pic with the 5 Allen screws shown.

My book is Nr 4623 2003 - 2006 models.

Yes, I now see that you indeed correct. However, I was following the instructions in section 4B-8 to get to the mass airflow sensor.

This is abriviated to "Remove the oil filler cap, unscrew the five Allen screws" with no picture... Ho hum... Anyhoo AA mans on his way, lets see what he reckons :)

I'm supposed to be moving house, not fixing cars! :)

...and right before he left it now wont even start... we cant hear the fuel pump priming either!

Now sending a flatbed to take it to the garage as its blocking the road where it is...

Oh well, hopefuly the saga ends here!

Thanks again for all the help and comments

Keep us posted mate - hopefully it's as simple as a new pump and filter.

Simple but expensive.

Good luck,

Singvogel.

Garage just confirmed it needs low pressure pump plus filter... as well as the bearings... ho hum... need car for the weekend so I don't have much choice!

At least it wasn't a bank breaker.

Thanks again!

Does the new house have somewhere to work on the car?

Personal experience tells me it probably will have, and if it has the car wont need any work doing to it once you've finished the move ;) !!
