can anyone help im sure someone has posted this before but i cant find any info.....

I'm trying to find some lanes in north/west yorkshire, i've found a few on the os maps marked with crosses, but most so far have been paved with just bad potholes, which hasnt been that fun.
What i am trying to find out is the green dots can we use them. i have spoke to the council/highways, but they don't seem to know the laws either... can anyone help me ?
also can we use foot paths marked with a dimond shape ?

This is all becoming very confusing, just read the latest landrover mag and they seem to use any lane????

any help would be great..... thanks everyone in advance....

Be VERY careful with those 'green dots' (1:25k OS) - these are invariably not open to motor vehicles or motor bikes....Even though they are stated as 'other ROWs' on OS map, it does follow it with a caviat.

The 'Diamond' shape you refer to are National Trails - these follow all sorts of routes from footpaths to Byways....However, you have kinda part answered that question youself really, by asking if you can drive a 'footpath'....NO

Basically, anything noted as a road (unless private) or Byway etc....can be driven assuming there are no TROs etc....

Just take a little time to look at maps properly, contact local ROW officers, view the 'definitive Maps' at the local authority (Not always upto date)

Also, looking at these definitive maps is good as it may highlight some Byways that are incorrectly sign posted on the ground as a bridle path or footpath etc....

Afaik, a Byway or BAOT cannot be downgraded, but it can be TRO'd etc...

Your local or county council will have a definitive map - frequently they have online access to the map and to a database of ROWs.

Sing out if you come up to Cumbria - there's one or two up here you'd probably like ;)

cheers guys thought i might get more abuse than this for asking.... i take it the little green dots are a bit dodgy then ?

oops been using these for a while now......

the green dots can be a grey area.... from wht little greenlaning i have done, with a more exerienced guy, on an OS Explorer map which is 1:25000 scale... they tend to mean:

"Other route with public access"

Some of these are private roads or farm tracks, and access can be withdrawn at any time IIRC

Check out the legend on the map. A few of the roads will also have small green dots along them. These are often "other routes with vehiclar access" and shown as very minor roads. Usually these are fine to drive, though TROs can be applied and should be observed religiously.

Do not be tempted to drive any route that is marked as a bridle path , or a footpath... nor to play to the side of a ROW to which you have access. You can be reported and your motor can be impounded.

Oh and... no one is going to give you grief for asking.... they would have given you grief for messing about where you shouldn't though... so feel free to keep on enquiring.

Previous post mentioned ROW officer at the council and the definitive map. These are, without doubt, the two most reliable sources of information available concerning ROW to which we have motorised access.

cheers very helpful stuff.... ive been glued to os maps since i got my disco in november but i have only found around 4 lanes in a 30 mile radius that are legal. (green crosses).

i have one last question on the subject of lanes. theres a lane not far from me again green crosses was a nice lane not to mad just gentle but when i got to the end the farmer had chained and locked the gate, i looked for another exit but there wasnt one, and the gate that was locked was the only one on the route, (didnt fancy driving over his crop) so i had to turn round and go back,
what i would like to know is does he have the right to do this ? as the lane is not restricted and there is no evidence (signs) to say it is,

even had a good chat with some walkers while i was out ............

Hi ugly duck, I have just got a discovery 1 and like you, would like to do green laning, also in West Yorkshire (just on lancashire border, Ripponden) if you get any good routes, could you post them?
thanks

As has already been said, sign up on the trailwise website TrailWise - The National Catalogue of Rights of Way even without being a member of CRAG or GLASS you get free searches in limited area. Go to the map page, zoom into the area to want to check, click "Search for tracks in view" then "search 3km around####" it will then show you any tracks that are in that area. Check the "Overlay key" this tells you what type of track it is. Click on the track itself, and it'll bring up a window with the track designation number, icons to show what are PROBABLY allowed to use that track, but also comments from full members about any difficulties, ie TRO's etc.
Going off the O/S map can only be used as a basic guide, I know of a BOAT in that area *Gorbeck road* that has recently had a full TRO put on it, the O/S map wouldn't tell you that.

When you do go out on the lanes, follow the country code, YOU stop to allow anyone else past, don't argue with people, smile & say hello, keep you speed right down, DON'T go ff the track, if you can't get through, back out & leave it. Don't go out on the lanes to "test your driving skills* go to a pay & play for that.
Appologises if I'm preaching to you, but I've seen lanes closed to us because of the few idiots that don't follow the rules.

hi mate im new here, where abouts in cumbria do you reccomend? im from carlisle

alright mate been on phone today to council, go on north yorkshire council website, find out and about maps, these show you byways we can drive on, i asked if he could tell me lanes in area and they just said its too big an area coverd and just to look on there webpage for them they also said some lanes have tros on but will be still be marked as greenlanes on map but could be closed, so i think its just a case of findingthem on maps then going out and looking for them and if there are signs saying you can not drive on them well its obvious, have you managed to get out anywhere yet mate think i might go out at weekend if your up for it give me a ring if you do
