Have you tried changing the gearbox oil? I used to have problems with 2nd both up and down. Changed the oil (some brand, can't remember but nothing special) and I've not had a problem since. You might be lucky. Worth a try.

The state of the oil that came out suggested that it hadn't been changed in quite a while and looked a very pale beige :-( Perhaps you had a similar idiot as a previous owner.

Mine's a similar age LT77 box.

I've had five LT77 boxes in five different landies. Only one of them had the crunch, soon got used to changing in or out of 3rd at the right speed. All the others have been spot on.

i have the same problem with my truck, going from second to third is a major problem, (try going up a hill in 4th gear lol)

i was given a suggestion from another forum, to ajust the two bias springs that hold and determ the gear stick posistion, i havent yet tried it but they have all got results from it so ill let you know how i goes.
