Gearboxes

Hi all

whats the best gearbox to use in my v6 88 s2a? ive got the old s2a box which is in need of a rebuild but i have a good s3 box in the workshop, whats needed to swap the s3 box into it? does the bulkhead need modifying?

The IIA later gearbox is stronger in general - if you have one D or later it will have the larger layshaft. it also has a proper throowout mechanism instead of the crappy setup III gearboxes have.

Were it me I'd rebuild the IIA gearbox and use that, and keep your foot OUT of the accelerator.

As far as fitting the III gearbox IIIRC the only issue you will run into is clearance of the clutch slave cylinder to the chassis - I believe there's a reinforcement web that will need to be trimmed down or away to give enough clearance for it.

from memory the clutch cylinder has to be moved, but thats not major task.

mine is an early 2a gearbox 1962 i think i know the bit that will need to be trimmed, not a major task

I would go for the series 3 over the early 2a as it's in good nick.

If it is as he says an early IIA (go by the revision letter as gearboxes get awapped about) I might agree. The bigger layshaft is a bonus, and might counteract the messing about with the shaft sizes caused by craamming another synchro in that box.

the series 3 suffix d is the best bet ,series 2s and 2as arent a stronger box ,plus series 3 suffix d has better shaped dog teeth to help hold into gears

i have now stripped both boxes and used a combined approach, using the 3rd and 4th syncro setup from the s2 and the rest is s3 with the s2 bellhousing as it will just be a lot easier to refit

What suffix was the series 3 box?

i belive its a B, its refitted to the landy now and seems to run ok, ill know more when the props are back on and on the test drive

any suffix except d is suitable for fitting series 2a front on, not done one for a year or so but was a common conversion

now i have a horiffic knocking noise coming from my bellhousing, sounds like a jackhammer! not sure if its engine or gearbox yet though, time to strip it out again and have a look
