Hello guys and gals. Some help and advice required please, about reverse gear selection on my 2000(v) Freelander TD, 160000 miles. Although all the forward gears select ok, all to often reverse jumps out of gear as soon as the clutch starts to bite, but other times works ok. A quick read of the Haynes suggests that the linkage is none adjustable (very little info at all).
Any one else had this problem, is the linkage worn or are the gearbox selectors worn.
And for the tratter boys, no, I don't want to burn it, as it is far too useful for that.;)

all to often reverse jumps out of gear as soon as the clutch starts to bite

mine does that as well .. only sometimes
but mostly in the same 'reversing-up-my-street-to-park' spot ..
somethin' to do with what angle the vehicle is ..
mine don't jump out of gear .. it doesn't engage it properly to start with
it needs a real 'positive' move of the gearshift lever ..
or .. moved into a forward gear first .. then back into reverse ..

~~~~~~~
i rekon it's linkage related ..
i.e. related to the way the *engine / gearbox sits relative to the vehicle body
given those *bits are on flexible mounts to soak up vibrations
~~~~~~~~

similar with 1st gear (on mine) ..
needs a 'positive' moved over-and-forward .. or if the n.s. wheels are up on a curb ..
selecting 2nd then back to 1st usually works .. although it be a rare occurrence

actually .. the times i've hit 3rd .. instead of 1st .. and stalled .. is downright embarrassing :)

~~~~~~~~~~~
btw: if you get under the vehicle and look at the linkage ..
there's a rod that rotates left-right .. and levers that move forward-backward ..
( for some reason on mine .. the rod has surface rust .. whereas the levers are 'clean' )
those 'movements' need to be translated at a right angle to reach the gearbox
( surmising as i can't view the whole lot 'cause i've yet to be able to remove the undertray .. rusty seized bolts )
haynes sais .. when changing the linkage .. to prize apart the little balljoints with flat screwdriver and add some grease
so .. they must wear over time ..
so far i've sprayed motorcycle chain-lube on the linkage under the gearshift lever ..
but as of yet .. have been unable to reach .. with the spray tube .. the other ball-joints in the engine bay ..
It's common for the bush at the base of the gear stick and the bush at the gearbox to go sloppy over the years, this results in a rather vague gear selection.
any one have a link to new bush's
all i could find with a google search were 2 youtubes :-(
~~~~~~~~~~

looking at this one suggests if some bushes could be sourced
and suitable bolts found .. should be d.i.y. 'able ..

no doubt be a case of making sure the nuts can't unwind off the bolts during use :)
