Just had my 300Tdi gearbox recon'd and vehicle now appears to 'struggle'/vibrate high up in fourth and low fifth with heavy throttle (can see the steering wheel vibrating). Speed is between 45-55mph. Problem diminishes during 4-5th up-change. Seemed to ease a bit after 20miles. Gearbox oil is ATF. Had new BFG's and wheels balanced 4months ago so don't suspect this. Any ideas what's going on?? Is it the gearbox or something else? Much appreciated.

Was done by a garage. Preparing to take it back, but if I was gonna insist that gearbox hasn't been done properly I'd need some reasoning. Alternativley, was wondering what else could be plausible so that I'm more informed if there's a 'discussion'.

I was advised that prop shaft(s) needed a look, so the suggestion of a fault on UJ's, above, could be on the money... Any other ideas would be very welcomed before I go back to garage.

prop alignment is some thing to look for some garages split props at the slide and dont understand how yokes should be aligned

Thanks guys. Based on your comments I spoke to garage and (also considering my reported, progressively louder, ‘slowing-down’ rattle) they agreed that prop shaft(s) are likely cause.

However…….prior to taking it in in the morning I’ve had a look and, although there appears to be some rotational play in the front prop splines/slider, and a bit in the UJ, there is more play in the transfer output shaft, on/off its axis, ie not just rotational, where it leaves the transfer box….

Following gearbox and transfer box recon I had to return the vehicle last week due to a leak at the output shaft seal. Yet I can tell there’s still a leak at the output shaft.

This is worrying, and evidently more than just the prop, is it not?

Surely there should be no axial play whatsoever in the transfer output shaft??

Also should mention that steering feels very heavy, like the front tyres are scrubbing across the road when turning. Worried that this sounds like a difflock-type problem... Although the diff stick is definitely in non-diff high range, it couldn't be somehow stuck in diff-lock could it?

Awaiting verdict from garage.

I would say that if you can detect rotational play in the propshaft sliding joint it's well and truly time for a new one. Play in transfer box output bearings is common too but your symptoms sound typical of worn propshaft joints. Also you do describe quite well what it would feel like if you had the diff lock engaged on tarmac. Reversing a bit sometimes helps to disengage it if it's reluctant to come out.
