Gearbox oil.

I know my 53 td4 is supposed to use car lube mtf 94. I looked at the defender gearbox oil, it's also supposed to use the same stuff. The servicing bay at work had a stash of mtf94 in 500ml bottles, now are these ok to use in the freelander as the are designed for the defender, seeing as tho they are supposed to use the same oil???

If the manual says use mtf94 and that's what you have? Then you have answered your own question

The thing is the manual says Car Lube MTF94, the stuff I have is what the MOD get supplied. I'm trying to find out if its different?

I would say , if it says mtf94 on the bottle then that's the stuff you need. Mtf94 is unique so I can't imagine it would be anything else in the bottle.

We got a box at work. Sure it was car lube on the box. MTF94 is the spec, it shouldn't make any difference what the brand on the bottle is.

Sweet! It's in there now and changes are back to normal now, no more fighting to get it in gear anymore.

The stuff that came out was black like used engine oil, quite worrying when you compare the colour of the stuff that went in.

have you changed ird oil too ,black means its not been serviced well as a car

heresay tells me that the ird oil is not on the service schedule is this true?

i cant think of a lr unit that lives long without regular oil changes ,that black dirty oil is what all the bearings, baulk rings, gears etc have been transmitting torque in ,

No James I haven't done that yet, to be fair it was clunking in and out of gear so didn't give anything else a second thort mate.

I will have a look see how much and what type of oil it takes and see if I have any in the garage. If not it will have to wait until next week.

That would be the rear diff mate, they say it doesn't need to be chaged so very kidly didn't build a drain plug into it. I called BS on that ones so siphoned the black gooey muck out overnight and then put fresh stuff in.

I never checked the diff either. Does it split easy enough? That may be the best way to empty it and then clean and replace the gaskets.

It's an easy job to remove the rear cover as it is held on with a few bolts being sealed with RTV. You will find all sorts of rubbish in the bottom too. I fitted a drain plug to my last Freelander and will on my current one too when time allows.

Just out of curiosity how much MTF94 is needed to do a gear box oil change. As above sometime have a problem selecting gear so think mine could do with an oil change as well.

2.2 litres iirc. Balking when changing gear is a sure sign the oil is past it's best.

Thanks for that. i also like the sound of changing the diff oil as well. what oil is needed for the diff, and if I remove the back plate to drain and clean out, what is the gasket seal stuff called.

80w90 iirc. The sealer used is silicon RTV. You can buy the correct stuff from LR but i'v used universal RTV many times without trouble.

It depends on what box it is, mine is the td4 manual, getag I think, takes 1.67 litres from empty.

The home done drain plug, did you just drill and tap a hole? I like the sound of that. It about time I done a proper service to be fair.

Edit; will hylomar do for sealing the rear diff??

Exactly that. I found a drain plug in the motor factors in a size tap I had. 10 x .75 iirc. I can't remember what car the plug came from though
I took the back plate off to drain the oil then drilled a hole in the lowest part of the case. Once the hole was drilled I tapped the correct thread. It was all sorted in an hour or so. It made changing the oil as easy as doing the IRD. The annoying thing is I only got to use the drain plug once as I sold the car on to buy my current V6.
