Disco 2 Gearbox issue

Hi all,

I have a 2003, Disco 2 Td5. Lately it has been grinding sometimes in first gear. Not all the time just enough to annoy me massively.

Bit of background; Locally I couldn't get MTF94 here in Ireland. I went to the main dealer who advised me to use 75W80 oil (if I remember correctly) I have driven with that a couple of months.

I now changed that today for MTF94 and while it is a lot better, it is still sometimes grinding before I can get it into gear.

What can be the cause this? What are the likely suspects?

Is it crunching as you change gear?

Yes like when you do it without using the clutch although no other gear has this problem.

But only sometimes and only first

Sounds like the baulk rings need replacing, common fault on that gearbox
Usually starts between 1st and 2nd

Sounds expensive!

Gearbox out jobby, live with it till you need to do the clutch, I would say, then 2 birds one stone

I won't do more damage? I would love to wait till summer to do it.
