Hi all I seem to have a problem with my auto gearbox on my 1998, 300tdi.
I had to change the oil and filter in the box as the old oil was very dark brown and burnt and this went with no problems.
But now the kick down cable seems to have snapped the throttle pedal goes down as normal and then seems to stop half way then if I push it anymore it clicks and then the box goes down another gear (as if it kicks down twice very rapid but not right)
I have looked under the motor on the gearbox and I can feel that the cable seems to have come out of the box but it is still connected.
Is the whole lot easy to change or is it best to just go for another box?
Also it seems to be losing oil but I cant find any leaks???
Any help would be good as with all the work thats been done on it I,m close to getting rid and I really dont wont to but I cant keep up with it.
And last question its a 300tdi safari and I was told this is a ltd edition with extra bits and bobs anyone shed any light on these?

Iirc it was a run-out model which LR added leather seats to a GS spec.

So the problem I have with the gearbox is not known then?
Thank you for the repy about the model.

To be honest the only gearbox-related comment I can offer is to do with your observation about losing oil.

To establish a baseline are you using the correct method for measuring the oil level? Cold engine, cycle through all gearstick positions, then back to Park and THEN check the level on the stick.

Anything you can do to help would be great.
I make sure its on level ground go though all the gears when cold and check levels then. The level always needs topping up at least once every two weeks (or two / three hundred miles) as the level drops to just below the min mark, when fill up to max level the box seems to go great again but I have had the whole engine, box and underside steam cleaned to find any leaks and nothing apart from the front of the sump seems to be wrong (and this oil leak is to be fixed soon).

I wish I could just find the leak and also find out how hard is the whole kick down cable to replace I have been told easy yet someone said no way you wont be able to do it yet that same person told me that you cant change the gearbox oil as there sealed for life

After you've cycled through the gears and put it back in park you do leave the engine running while you dip the oil?

Assuming the answer to the above is yes, have you checked the transfer box oil? I'm not sure if it applies to autoboxes, but on manual ones the main box oil can leak through into the tranny box.

Other than that I'm a bit stumped, sorry.

Yes the engine was still running.
The Transfer box was also on my mind so I drained the oil from it and put in new so I could check the old oil but it didn't seem to be leaking into it.
Thank you anyway.
