Have a 1995 300tdi with 117k would much appreciate any feed back concerning gearbox, axle, swivel pin & transfer box oil change. To the best of my knowledge it has never been changed!!
Should I be changing all these oils at some time and best way to do it????.I have checked axles and they are at the correct level not been able to check gearbox as I don't have correct torx do dar, what size is it and where can I get one?Believe it's a bit of a pig to do with a syringe so was thinking of doing it with a very long length of pipe and a funnel held high in the air and thought of heating the oil first.

Thanks in advance.

Jason , you should visit the Difflock site for all you want to know about oils and lubricants for the Discovery .
As for changing the oil I once used the system you suggested - a long length of plastic tube with a funnel on one end and the other end in the gearbox .Still a bit messy but it worked .
Since then I purchased an item from Difflock that holds about a litre which it draws in using a plunger . There is a length of plastic hose fitted to the end the end of which fits into the gearbox and then you simply pump the oil in using the plunger . I have used it a few times and found it very quick and mess free.
The Difflock site gives the capacities and recommended lubricants for diffs/tbox/gbox/swivels etc and , I think , the tools you need.
Draining the main gearbox is usually messy as the drain plug is over a cross member - have a look before you start and maybe you can rig up something to carry the oil into a container.

hi

i personally change my gearbox oil ( atf ) every 12 months when i do my service, i use a piece of garden hose fed up through the engine compartment and a funnel which seems to work very well.
i change the oil in the transfer box and diffs along with brake fluid and antifreeze every 2nd year .
i also change engine oil and filter and grease the prop uj's every 6 months.
i don't know if this is adaquate or maybe a bit excessive but it works for me.
before you drain any fluids take the car for a run to get the oils warm then remove the filler plugs first to make sure you can undo it to refill ,
my swivel joints are filled with one shot grease so i leave them alone.

Damn Difflocks site is down for upgrade, does anybody Know the size of the Torx bit for the gearbox filler? On my series 11 many moons ago I use to use neat STP in the swivels and steering box, it never leaked and always gave silky smooth steering (well for those days), I was wondering about doing the same with my swivels on my Disco instead of the one shot grease which on my previous Disco still leaked and needed frequent topping up.

It's a Torx jobby ref: T-55 ;)

SORTED!!:)

Borrowed a 1/2 litre special oil syringe with a bent nozzle, had a friend fill the bloody thing up whilst I was laid underneath firing the oil back in!!!!!;)

Funnel, and pipe can be handy for this job... someone stands with the oil and pours it down the funnel when your ready, or jam it into a vice or sumtin, then hold a kink into the pipe...
