Just looking for some advice on these synchro leaf springs. I'm rebuilding the box because in swallowed a spring that came out as lovely zig-zag bits with the oil. :( The other two are pretty much worn out also.

Anyway, as normal I'm trying to do a good job and getting proper bearings and seals from Simply Bearings and trying hard to avoid the Britpart stuff manufactured from chocolate.

I got some new Bearmach leafsprings and just tried to fit them however there's a problem, well two problems: firstly the 'top-hat' section midway along is too wide and doesn't hardly enter the neutral position detent, and secondly the folded ends are too short and not folded at 90 degrees so the spring(s) just pop out when you move the thing by hand.

LR Direct are after £12.80 (each) for genuine springs - I guess this is what I have to buy? I'll tell them that the 15p Bearmach ones are as much use as a chicken wire submarine tomorrow!

Any thoughts?

I know, but the Britpart ones will most likely be made wrong too and also manufactured from annealed mild steel with a good helping of slag! I just purchased some genuine LR ones at huge expense but given the work involved doing this job it's probably money well spent!

Just to finish off this one the genuine LR springs arrived yesterday and they are perfectly manufactured and everything is now good. The only thing I didn't notice was that they were sold in bags of 10 so I ordered three and ended up with 30 springs :-( LR Direct will take the 20 back so you can't grumble about that.

Bearmach springs are total crap, they won't properly hold the 3/4 gear in its neautral and they are not bent over at the ends properly and will ping out - avoid the dammed things at all costs given the work involved to get to gearbox guts!

I replaced my 3rd/4th sychro springs through the top, just took the selector cover off and removed the selectors. Gearbox stayed connected in the car. It can be done, it saved hours of effort.
