I have just got a 1997 Disco 300Tdi and when its in neutral the gear stick sits over to the left where 1st\2nd gear is rather than in the 3rd\4th position. Am I being paranoid or is this indicating an issue somewhere? If there is something wrong is it an easy fix? It seems to go into all the gears OK when driving with no crunching etc anywhere... Cheers all...

Sounds like you may have a broken bias spring.

The following is from the TD5 manual but its the same gearbox for your disco, so may be of some help.

Thanks... Looks like an easy fix... Will it cause any long term issues if its this or can i just get used to it?

Its an easy job to do but yes you could live with it.

The only possible problem is if the spring is floating loose, then it could lodge into a place preventing you from either selecting some gears or being stuck in one gear.

This isn't internal to the box so there is no possible damage that can be caused to the box, just inconvenience really.

The most likely problem is that the spring has become dislodged or when someone has replaced the bias plate (these can and do break) they havn't bothered to get the spring back into place properly as it can be a sod of a job under tension.
