Ok, so having taken the tip from a friend I put my 51 discovery in to a local garage to do the clutch and dual mass flywheel. Time and access just wouldn't allow me to do it myself.

£630 later and the new clutch fitted, the gear shift feels like a bowl of porridge.
Selection is ok however, the gear leaver no longer centralises to the middle of the gate an "flops" across to 5th / reverse.

My friendly garage says it was like that before. Clearly it was not.

They even left 3 rivet heads on the floor, clearly they have drilled out the rivets for something.

Having looked at all options with the garage it now falls upon me to resolve this.

How complex is this?
Does the gearbox need to come back ?
Can this be rectified under the gear shift gaiter?

Can anyone help at all please,

sounds like bias plte has broken ,youd need to remove console and plate covering tunnel then rubber gaiter over lower gear lever ,the plate with 4 bolts securing lower lever is bis plate and should have a tab standing vertical between the springs either side of lever ,it can be replaced or welded back together , the 4 bolt holes are slotted to enable you to set plate so gear lever rests in 3rd /4th gear alignment

Agreed, push them to fix it as above, failing that, jamesmartins info above should be easy to do. Hmm food for thought, im going to get a new clutch on mine when I get home.....(working at sea just now) and had pretty much decided to get a garage to do it as I be busy with new baby....now im not sure, I did have reservstions about paying a garage to not quite do it right.

gaiter needs to come out to remove box, they've not cleaned up the drilled out rivits.
as above, bias plate bust. cant see how garage will have broken it.

Agreed if a garage has caused the damage they should resolve it, if they haven't then no. What reasons have they given for the responsibility falls on you?
Sounds like bias issue not box

If you want me to have a look (free of charge of course) and see what's up with it give me a call 0191 4155738 if your location is still right we're not far away

Sounds like a bias plate which isn't something you can break by being rough, its more something broken over time and age and probably just gave up when in their hands, you also need to drill rivets out to allow the gear sticks to drop through the floor so that'll be where they're from.

remove yo number off a public forum unless yu need double glazing, accident recovery or electric panels.

Quick pic of the bias plate (from when I fitted my CDL lever) so you can see what the above guys are describing.

In the passenger foot well you can just see the black transmission cover that has been removed. It has to be drilled out so that's where the rivet heads have come from.

Outstanding support guys. Thank you all so much
Got to the Bias plate and found it in tact but had been moved (if the boltheads were anything to go by)
Repositioned it and hey presto....... Gear shift sits in place and selection is smooth as it ever was.
Not sure why they would need to move it to drop the box out but heyho.....
Thanks all again.....
:)

Oh Yeah Chuffed to bits

MOT'd it today too. Passed (just) with a load of advisories:
rear springs corroded
Track rod has some corrosion
Fuel pipe is corroded
Brake pipe corroded
High centre stop lamp inoperative
and some under seal needed.
I have been trying to locate a parts list to ensure that I get the right springs and track rod end - there is a lot of talk about RAVE cd etc. I found one site that I can "sign up to" and pay a monthly fee.....
If you were buying replacement parts, where would you get them from??
Can I get a "parts list" still... 2001 D2 TD5

Outstanding
Thanks Fellah

Stupid question..... rear coil springs.... are they "Left or Right Handed" my thoughts are that they are not?????
