Just got a replacement galvanised chassis for my series III from Marslands, I quite like the look of it as it is and am tempted to rebuild it un painted, am I missing a trick by not painting it. Opinions please.

Would you mind me asking how much it cost you? is it a SWB or LWB?

thanks

If ya don't paint it yu'll just be making it even more desirable to one of ya fellow landy owners who decides he'd rather steal yours than have to pay for a noo one

Its a SWB and cost just short of £1100, paid an extra £30 for an un boltable cross member which allows the gear box to be dropped out instead of lifting it through the floor worth the extra in my opinion it's called the North American version for some reason and allows twin fuel tanks to be fitted either side also.

thanks. I'm currently weighing up the merits of shot blasting and waxoyling, OR having a galv chassis fitted. Mine's a 300tdi 110 though, so would be a snatch more expensive I reckon.

Thanks

Personally I love the look of it unpainted... but I suppose it depends on your personal preference?

If you are doing lots of adventurous off road stuff, or using it near salt water then I can see the benefits of the additional protection - that said in normal use the new galvanised chassis should outlast you and I.

I've also just put a new Marsland's Galvanised chassis on mine, along with a galvanised bulkhead and rear tub trims from Ashtree... I have yet to complete the rebuild but hoping that it will look like the dogs doodahs

You are best off painting it, but you need to consider your primer... there are a number of different kinds and the type that etches itself into the metal is reckoned to be good. I recently read an article about it which was really good but can't remember where - it was either on here on the defender 90/110 section, in the latest LRO or on the Richards Chassis website...!

Mordant solution - spray it on with a household squeezy spray bottle thing, or even a washed out kitchen/bathroom cleaner spray bottle, let it turn black and paint it with whatever you like

Why haven't Land Rover used galvanised chassis on their production vehicles? Is it simply down to cost or are there other reasons?

Thanks for your reply I too like the idea of the galvanised look. who are Ashtree I've Googled them but can't find them. Someones painted my galvanused bits black and I'd be interested to know how much a new galvanised bulkhead is as well. Cheers John

Hey,

I've actually just finished spraying up a new Richards Chassis and I must say I am glad I did - not only do I think it looks alot nicer, but it will be easier to clean..less desirable to thieves and (generally speaking) more appealing to any future buyers as it will retain an original look..regards to primers, just good wash over with thinners (or mordant solution), acid etch primer (1k) then std grey primer..couple of thick black coats..good to go (at least I hope so..because thats what i've done!)

With regard to Ashtree bulkheads - actually ordered one - due to arrive this weekend - cannot wait! Cost is ( I think) about £900 - including delivery and the exchange of your old bulkhead - providing its not too perished..I think, but you'd have to phone them, they are online just froogle it.

Matt

Speak to Lyndon Swan (Lyn) and tell him Perry Osborne gave you his details (probably won't get it any cheaper, but I do like companies that do excellent work to know that it's appreciated and the word is being spread)

Cheers

Left mine unpainted and quite like the look of it (in fact there's a bit more unpainted than just the chassis). Get some envious looks by people who realise it's a galved chassis.

Got it from Richard's though and was substantially cheaper than Marslands and haven't got a bad word to say about them.

Regarding 110 chassis from Richard's they're ~£1200 so £300 more than an 88".

I like the look of mine unpainted as it makes it looks rustic, but the only problem is i want to fit a NAS rear step and tow bar, has anyone else done this to a unpainted chassis? What looks good? Is it possible to get a NAS Step galvanised to match the x member!?

i would of thought so, just take it to a galvanisers to be acid dipped and zinc dipped
