Another new problem, the side-mounted tank on the 90 has sprung a leak. It's dripping from the lowest point on the guard underneath but there's a lot of staining elsewhere the the whole rear of the tank is wet, checked the top of it under drivers seat and although the area around the sender unit seems a little damp it doesn't seem big enough to create the amount that looks to be leaking down.

So I'm thinking it's probably burst a seam, although I could do with some further investigation. With the amount I've spent recently I could do without having to buy a new tank so unless I'm lucky and manage to find the source of the leak what's the bet on trying a second hand tank? Or is it just not worth it?

There's lots of crap and areas of rust caught between the tank and the guard, don't want to start poking it out too much at the moment in case all that crap is the only thing bunging up the possible hole.

Heavy right foot....hmmmm

could be the fuel filler, mine always ****es diesel from it sloshing in the tank
Far from it :p I usually feather it and let it build momentum :D

Will have further look around it tomorrow and see if I can spot any point of origin. Thanks for your help.

Anyone got any views on trying to source a second-hand tank from the local Landy breakers if this one does turn out to be rusted through?

I had a similar thing with mine the rear bolt on the seat had punched a hole in the top of tank I fixed it (well temp fix)with a cheap petro patch but it has started to seep again so av just bought a new tank an it's on my to do list

Mine got a hole at the lowest point, there is a bump half way along where all the sh*t get's stuck between the tank & guard.
It's a pain in the arse to get out, all the mounting points had rusted away so have to weld new ones in.

Had a bit more of a look today - filler hoses look fine, the rear seat bolt looks like it's very close to or just touching the tank but there's no indication of diesel running down from there.

Seems like it could be the rear seam as all the rear of the tank (down towards the drain plug) is wet with diesel from the seam down, but can't see anything running down from above the seam, then I guess it's running down towards the lowest point which is the circular bit on the guard, then dripping onto the floor. :(

Its a common fault with these tanks (bad design). Was the first job I had to do on mine. Not the nicest of jobs in the world to do!!!

Mine started weeping diesel through a rusty patch on the front end - where the guard should have been if it hadn't rusted away. As a temporary measure until I could get a new tank I put some Loctite silicone sealant over the leak and that worked great until I fitted a new tank. In fact after I took the old tank off I tried to peel the Loctite off and I couldn't...

Cheers guys, I reckon I'll be needing a new tank...however the leak seems to have lessened a lot now the tank has gotten down to about half full on the gauge.

Can't find the exact cause of the leak, I would say the rear seam looks suspicious but it also looks like I shouldn't go poking and scraping at it as I'll probably make it worse.

I could not see where mine was leaking from but decided to change it for a new one. Once the old one was off I blasted it with a jet wash and it blew holes through it all over the place. I bent the guard back on mine and it has rotted away underneath.
