Hi All,
Now have my dream car, 52 plate TD4 GS, but yesterday started to have a few problems.
Firstly the engine kept running although had taken key out.
Then lost power when driving, the engine malfunction light came on. Had trouble starting (as if no fuel) eventally started (light went out). A friend suggested emptying the fuel filter. Would this help.

Anyone got any ideas??????????

hi nutty un welcome. . .got me finkin on this one ,normally I'd say fuel filter un after thet pmp's. . .but it runs on wiff key out eh!!! so yer lookin at injectors still bein given er signal ta run , on the td4 this operation falls under the ECM[electronic controlled management] this takes lots er signals from engine including the key signal[on off] and in on position gives signals to high speed solenoids ta give high pressure fuel ta injectors. . . .nuff er thet ****e, summit wrong wiff ECM or yer key switch is fooked , check all relays relating to thet subject furst. . . .un best oh luck earthling :)

Thanks for that Ming,
It only ran on the once, now it just loses power, it as if something is blocked and just needs blowing through, it only does it once warm, and when it does cut out i have trouble starting again - i'm hoping this is not an expensive problem.

well if we can disscount the running on problem, then yer have ,change fuel filter [always do this furst] then check the fuel pum p time out , turn key to on [dunt start engine ] hold hand on lift pmp in your case[under bonnet rhs near wheel arch] should vibrate fer 12s then stop, if not check fuse fer fuel pmp if thets good then change fuel pmp relay. . . .if thats all good get back on ear and we will go deeper un down ,down down deeper un down, da da daaa git down deeper un down. . . .oops shorry got carried away then. . . .:D

Based on what you describe i would clean/change the engine breather filter, if its blocked oil can enter the cylinders and this will fuel the engine whilst the keys are out, also the lack of power you describe points to this potentially being the source of your problem.

Take your engine cover off and the filter sits in a case held on by 4-5 allen key bolts at the top/back of your engine, behind your injectors.

You must also remove the complete air filter cover to get at the breather filter. Do a search on it to see for yourself what it looks like.

Its a 30 minute job to clean/replace.
