bought a fuel lift pump from 4x4landroverparts.co.uk
part No: ETC7869 link ETC7869
tried to fit it yesterday but wouldnt sit right. took the old one off dipped in deisel and cleaned it up and compared the two and on the new one the arm that sits on the cam is slightly different length and the angle of the upturned part of the arm is also different. not wanting to knacker the housing plate threads or anything Id didnt force it on to fit but has anyone had a similar experience - I know its a cheap part but I would think that if the part No: is correct then it should fit! and give some service!

Defender 1991 200tdi.

That is indeed the correct pump for your engine. Did the pump that you removed have a plastic spacer attached to it at all, or is there some form of spacer still stuck to the block? (Usually black plastic). There should be NO spacer fitted when using the correct lift pump for this engine, and it will only sit flush against the block when you tighten the bolts up. It is simply the priming lever / arm pushing against a cam lobe.

Hi - there is no spacer on mine at the moment - the lift pump sitting flush on the plate.
looking at the OE defender parts list pdf on page 101 there appears to be a spacer would that be for earlier models like the TD?
As I said the one I purchased definately has a longer arm with less of an angle at the end but not wanting to damage anything I refitted the old one.

Excuse my niavity but what is the procedure for turning the engine by hand - just rocking the vehicle back and forth while in gear or some other method?
