The low fuel light is constantly on in my 93 200tdi, I know there is planty of derv in the tank because i just put £50 in it. Its been like this for a couple of weeks now. It will occaisionally read as normal for about 10 mins and then decied to go back to reading empty and the light comes back on.

Any ideas on what this may be?

A quick update, i had a look at the connections on the sender unit, the earth( at least i think it was) seemed very rusty so i cleaned it up a bit but that did not work it still read empty even though there is still plenty of derv in the tank

any suggestion on how this may be fixd or should i a) live with it b) get a nw sender unit

depends which you have the least of a/. time or b/. money
if it's a/. buy a replacement
if it's b/. take the sender out and see if you can find the hole then fix it with araldite, hot knife or superglue
if it's a&b - buy a jerry can :D

before you remove the sender/pump - short/open circuit the sender signal & see if you get a change in the guage reading

GOing to take the sender unit out and have a look at thet to see if it is broke, but first i want to test the wires/guage. I have heard mention about earthing a connection and if the wire etc are ok then the guage will read full. How exactly would i do this?

The sender is basicaly a resister and the guage measures the diference between 12v and 0v

By taking it off from the sender you will probably get an empty reading and if you then short it to a metalic piece of chassie you will be reading full.

To actualy short it you can use any means possible to do this. You may need to get some one to sit in the car while you short it so they can see the nelde go up.
