Hi,

I recently acquired a running but neglected 1996 Defender 300TDi 110 SW and have been gradually working through it. The biggest red flag right now is the rear brakes – it seems someone fitted the wrong disc on the RHS, or maybe had the existing disc machined down to around 9mm thickness (OEM spec is 14.1mm and to replace at 13.1mm). So that's top of my list to overhaul.

Anyway, I'm trying to source parts in a country almost completely devoid of Land Rovers, and the best deal I can find on replacement rear discs for this model is from EuroBrake, part number 5815204039. Here's the equivalent model on eBay UK. The original LR part number is (I believe) FTC3846.

However, I can't find any reviews online of EuroBrake discs for Defenders, so wanted to ask here before putting in an order if anyone has any experience with them. AFAIK a brake disc is just a piece of machined and drilled steel, so as long as the dimensions are correct it shouldn't be possible to go too far wrong... right?

Thanks for any thoughts!

Tom

A country devoid of landrovers .... :vb-confused2:
I mean, what would you do ?
What would you talk about ?
What excuse would you have to own a garage, tools, a tin of rust treatment .. (the horror)

Anyway, i'm with you on the disc, it is just a piece of machined steel.
No doubt there are differences but we are not race cars or hill climbers that need ceramic brakes.

Here's a list of parts that the supplier will ship (or is likely to ship) to your mystery 'global' location ..

If the Europart discs are readily available, then i'd buy them and change out your thin disk asap.

Ooooh, who got out of bed the wrong side this morning .. :)
It's not a Ford you know ....
No a ford will be better made/more reliable and the parts cheaper, unless its wet belts we are talking about!

Thanks all!

My mystery location is Armenia. I know of a total of 6 other Defenders on the road here🤣, but just owning one is enough to have acquired a garage full of tools (although rust treatment is hard to find).

Most car parts get here through the Russian distributor emex.ru, which is where I've found those EuroBrake discs. It'll be about £80 a pair delivered, which is steep but by far not the most expensive way to get them (LRDirect want £310 just for delivery!), so for safety's sake I'm going to bite the bullet and order them.

Cheers!

So this whole thing backfired. I ordered a pair of rear discs sold as equivalent to FTC3846 and received a pair of rear discs equivalent to LR018026. Unfortunately I didn't realise until I was trying to refit the brake calipers, when noticed they were about 20mm offset against the disc and therefore wouldn't fit. Turns out I'd bought what I now believe are rear discs for TDCi 110s, which have the same disc diameter and thickness but slimmer hub bosses 🤦‍♂️

Looking again online (as I really thought I'd done my research) it seems there's a fair bit of confusion in the aftermarket over the various specs of solid rear disc for Defenders of different generations and wheelbases. The ones I took off had a total depth of about 70mm, and that matches what LRDirect are selling under FTC3846, which should theoretically fit my '96 300TDi 110.

Anyway, lesson learned. Guess my Landy will have to stay on its blocks for a while longer!

EDIT: Here's an example of why this is so confusing:

FTC3846 should fit my vehicle and should have an overall depth of 70.1mm and a braking surface thickness of 14.1mm. (Measuring the removed discs confirms this.)

But when I put FTC3846 into the Delphi online catalogue, I'm told their equivalent is BG2799, which has a depth of 62mm and a braking surface thickness of 13mm.

Yet if I look up BG2297 in the same catalogue, I get a disc which seems to have the exact specs of FTC3846, but is listed as a front disc, and as the equivalent of FRC7329, which again is supposedly a non-vented front disc for a later model 90.

I get the same mess of conflicting data from the Meyle catalogue (another brand available here at reasonable prices).

On the other hand, yet another manufacturer, Blue Print, lists their FTC3846 equivalent with what I believe are the correct specs!

Help!!!
