Hi guys,

Just rebuilding my front propshaft (2001 td5) and replacing the UJs and centre bearings.

First problem I encountered was that the splines were seized absolutely solid - no movement whatsoever in the shaft. Using a drift I managed to tap the shaft back into itself but that still didn't properly free it, so I put a bar through the yokes at the end of the splined section and tapped on that with a lump hammer until the shaft came apart, greased it and reassembled with brand new UJs.

What I've noticed though is that the UJ (this is the single one that ISNT part of the Hookes joint at the transfer box end) moves much more easily in one plane than the other. I mean, it's not properly hard to shift, just a lot stiffer than the other. The stiff plane relies on the rollers that sit in the shaft end - so I am wondering if I might have ovalled the holes in the yokes when I was tapping the end of the shaft out - so that the rollers are stiffer because the cups are more compressed by the out-of-round yokes.

Is this a possibility and if so, is this slight increase in stiffness (note, no roughness) normal, and should I be worried?

Cheers,

David
