Hi, i have just turned 17 and have got a c""reg 2.5 diesel 90 for my first car.
I know series land rovers powered the rear wheels when diff unlocked
When i have it unlocked in my 90 the front prop shaft turns but it does not drive.
To get it moving I can lock the diff to drive both prop shafts but it is only rear wheel drive then.
Does this mesn that 90s were normally front wheel drive?
If so does this suggest a broken half-shaft at the front?
Thanks
Andrew Pearce

g'day
first orf series landies don't got no diff lock. 2nd orf how do you know its not driving? have you jacked it up one wheel at a time and turned the wheels to see if the prop turns?
let us know what you find when you have done that.

hi again, sorry when i said a diff lock I meant the transfer box to engage 4 wheel drive.
Are 90s front wheel drive when running in 2wd though? this would help me as if they are then i know where to go from.
Thanks
Andrew

i've never had any thing to do with 90's but i'd say no it's not. it will be rear wheel drive. put it in gear jack up one wheel and turn it. check to see if the prop is turning. do that with all wheels. if prop don't turn suspect a halfshaft.

the 90 is the same as the 110, permanant 4wd. a centre diff is fitted to allow the front and rear axle to turn independant to each other and to deliver a 50/50 drive. if you have to engage the centre diff to get any traction then you have a problem. you say that the front prop turns, i assume this is when you are trying to drive, if this is the case you have a front axle problem, halfshaft/diff/cv joint could have failed.

thanks fur the advice but
it ain't my 90 i was just trying to help. i've only ever played with series rovers. which as we know don't got no centre diff.

The 90 and 110 are full time 4 wheel drive as mentioned in the earlier posting.

the small knob (transfer box) has 6 positions.

High range - diff unlocked (this is used in most driving condition. back & right)
High range - diff locked (simple words; split power equal to both axel. back & left)
Neutral - diff unlocked (doesn't move the vehicle anywhere, but on some models can)
Neutral - diff locked (be used to run a Power Take Off [PTO] eqiupment)
Low range - diff unlocked (this selects low range gear. forward & right)
Low range - diff locked (low range and 4 wheels at the same speed. forward & left)

so if you said front prop rotates but no drive then it's your half shafts are the problem. oh no. you can't really tell by looking unless you jack up one wheel at the time and check.
