A friend of mine has posted this on another forum, we had help but without conclusion so here is the original thread. thanks :)

e missus has a Freelander which passed it's MOT a fortnight ago. The MOT station has a pretty good reputation.

On the weekend, the front drivers side wheel started making grinding noises on braking. She says it's not affecting braking at all but its happening most of the time.

She's burying her head in the sand at the moment and still driving it. She's afraid to take it into a garage in case somethings wrong and it will cost money to fix it (!)

Anyone have a clue what it's likely to be?

freelander pads are notorious for wearing unevenly, you could have 5mm left on the outer pad but the inner one will be on the metal.

Nothing wrong, its just how they are, never heard of stones getting stuck, they do on defender but not on freelander.

MOT tester is not allowed to remove anything while doing an MOT and that includes the wheels, if he cant see the pads properly, he has to pass it

stones tend to get stuck between backplate and disc, so the noise will be more constant.if its just when braking i'd go wiff the worn pads theory

Grinding brakes = worn brake pads

... or possibly warped rather than warn, but not really likely on Freelander IME.

Either way, cost implication is £20.

Cheers

Could be either.

Had both:rolleyes:

Stone was from driving on da beach:D

The stone was a bugger to get out and made a slightly different but much much louder noise to the worn out pad. worn out pad noise was more in car were as stone trapped was fecking in, out and all about.
Trouble is if the pads are worn down to the metal ya could knacker ya disc ta boot if ya drives it too long. Best check it out.
