before I get the 'use the search' I have and had no joys with the selection it's brought up.

basically my current axle on my L reg D1 200tdi is looking shabby and has a hole in the mount for the radius arm and has a leak so I have got hold of another axle from an L reg 300tdi that I plan to strip clean and rebuild now I already know the chrome swivels are knackered as they are pitted so I'm going to rebuild it to the stage of using my teflon swivels instead.

Now my question is does anyone have a source for the gaskets and seals needed to do a full strip and rebuild or can I use plenty of sealant gunk in place of the paper gaskets and just renew the seals?
also is there any recommended paints to make it all shiny for as long as possible, I was thinking hammerite but have read that people are not as happy with it as they used to be so was wondering if there is anything else someone can recommend.

thanks in advance people hope this is going to be a good mini project for me and my kids so any help is appreciated

I refurbished mine to a factory finish last year.

Highly recommend getting the casing acid dipped and then using POR-15 paint, as discussed on another thread tonight.

I also had the swivel housings and hubs acid dipped and then painted them.
Depends how far you want to go. I probably went too far...

now they look smart have they got the weld on wrap round diff guards?

They're a 6mm thick, weld on replacement diff pan made by Gwyn Lewis.
I had him weld them on as the amount of heat generated welding those on warps the axle casing, so he set up a jig and straightened them back out again by welding strips across select areas of the tubing and grinding it off again. :)

what paint did you use on your axles. that looks like a tough coating

Thinking about it, that's a good question...
The axel casings were the one thing I didn't paint myself.

My mate has a spray gun and is damn handy with it. (Hence getting him to do them. :D ) He used a proper etch primer and some hardcore, black topcoat that went on like tar and dried like concrete.
I'll ask him what it was called.

I have had a look at a load of different seal and gasket kits on paddocks but didn't realise before that the vin number made that much difference for the axles so is there any way of telling which axle I have got so I can get the right kits for it? I know my axle is from a 300 tdi on a L reg and it looks to be the same as mine (200tdi on a L reg) going by the drive flanges having the rubber caps on the end. unlike my mates 200tdi that has solid drive flanges that have a mini drive shaft on them that feeds into the hub. I have some pics of the axle if needed or can get specific pics of it tomorrow if there is anything that would help identify it

cool mine is non abs and the replacement is non abs so hopefully their the same. next question is with the diff fit out of the 300 axle into my mates 200 axle or is there a difference in the gear ratio that may cause transmission problems? as he is after the diff for his but I'm happy with mine so will be building 1 good axle out of my current one and this replacement one

diffs are all the same ratio its only 10 or 24 spline half shaft fitment that changes, so a dif from fat drive member axle wont fit with a thin drive member axle

is it possible to switch all the 10 spline stuff i.e. diff, half shafts and drive flanges into the 24 spline axle casing or is it more involved than that? just throwing some ideas about so I can tell my mate whether or not he can fit the diff out of my axle into his.

ah ok so probably won't be able to sort my mate's 'broken' diff with the one out of this new axle then. is there any way of telling what size the swivel seal is before I strip it as the axle is outside so I want to get all the seals and gaskets before I break any seals and get damp inside it
