hi ive had my freelander about a month now and noticed when i slowed down sometime made a wobbling sound drove it tonight and now mainly when i slow down getting a loud noise a vibration sounds like its coming from mid to rear of car when i got the car was told the ird and vcu was replaced 2 years ago so shouldnt be that could it be the propshaft bearings or is there anything else it could be its a 1999 2.0d 3 door if that helps any info would be good thanks ben

i dont drive the freelander much as its the wifes car but got in it yesterday and the problem is now alot worse the noise inside is awful sounds like a helicopter the noise is now constant and vibrating the whole car still sounds like its coming from mid to rear of car can anyone shed any light on what its most likely to be or what i should be lokking for when i get underneath it thanks ben :)

Propshaft bearings/VCU mounts are the number 1 suspect.

What happens to the noise as you slow to a halt?

A visual inspection will likely tell you nothing about the bearings.

You need to get the car on a hoist with all 4 wheels off the ground and set the wheels rolling.

Any decent mechanic will be able to check the bearings just by listening to them.

With engine stopped you could lower the VCU carefully (and supported) just enough to spin the bearings.

Get decent GKN ones with FAG bearings otherwise the job will need doing again soon.

thanks for all your help got under it today and the 2 propshaft bearing rubbers are completly split spoke 2 the previous owner and he did say they were done 2 years ago but he also said they were cheape ebay ones so now 2 more questions can i still drive with the propshaft removed or is there anything i need to do to the car first and any ideas of what make or where best to get the new bearings from thanks ben

You may love it in mondo, I do! If you have an accident and have not told insurer you could be in bother but if its a temporary situation, well, your call?

i not going to drive it on the road with no prop i just ment to move it off the ramps and around my car park

You should be fine then - I've gone about 25,000 miles without prop - makes your VCU last longer when its up the shed!:D

that link takes me to the cheap ones but on there ebay shop they have got some gkn ones for £40 odd quid are they the ones i want

Yes that's the ones. They are not to far from me so I went there to pick them up, the price I paid was £36.50 for the same ones. It say's GKN and Fag bearings on the side.
