Has it been worked on recently? If you remove the wrong nut on the back of the Jatco auto in the Freelander 1, reverse gear stops working. Something falls off inside which the nut was holding in place. Think it's the reverse brake band. Often peeps remove the wrong nut thinking it's the auto oil level. It aint.

freeland had engine out as bottom end went

so it case of take box out
take apart and refix nut
or replace box

is the auto box the same in rover 75 auto as freelander
Yes I think so, but the gear ratio's will be different. Did reverse gear work prior to engine removal? If so then it's probably the wrong nut removed and the bit inside fell off. Could be another fault which just happened at the same time, but wrong nut is common. Many garages have done it.

thank you
gearbox was working fine before engine came out

does anyone know a breaker that has got 1
been told that second hand 1 should be between 250 and 450
had quote for rebuild on old box of 850

When buying a replacement auto make sure the torque converter is with it. Many sell these on on their own and flog the auto without. Auto’s not worth as much without. Your auto could be exchanged for a recon unit.

The problem you have here is a v6 Freelander is priced lower than other Freelanders. Not many about as the td4 auto is better on mpg. You have to weigh up the cost of a replacement auto, be it a reconditioned unit which is tried and tested or an unknown unit from someone who will tell you it works when your paying for it. If you can fit it yourself then there’s a saving to be made. If it were mine I’d be thinking about the cost of repair. The chance of the repair working if buying an auto which I didn’t know if it worked. And the cost savings over future years if buying a diesel auto instead. Also the mileage on the replacement would concern me if it weren’t a recon unit.

Someone asked what would I do if it were me? I’ve been thinking about this recently after seeing a car written off when it rolled. Also had a few near misses recently where I’ve been stationary and others have nearly hit me. The last one driving in the middle of the road whilst looking over his shoulder.

I don’t think I’d replace the auto unless it was a late model Freelander 1, and worth doing so I could continue to own it and benefit from the repair. It would depend on the engine mileage. Many on ere don’t like the v6. I have to admit mine was inherited. If I were to choose a Freelander it would be a diesel. Having now owned an auto I would buy an auto in preference to a manual Freelander. Diesel gives better mpg. That’s the reason. Reliability is better on the diesels but you could always get a bad one I guess.

I wuvs ma hippo I does. :) My hippo will soon be 11 years old soon. By that time the mileage will be about 32k. He’s in good condition and well looked after. Having already had a replacement auto 20k miles ago I know how expensive it can be. I paid £2200 at a main dealer plus the diagnostic for £110. There was an attempt to repair the oil leak which failed. That cost about £300. Hence the auto was replaced as by this time the torque convertor had run on low oil and gear change was poor. You can get a recon fitted by ashcroft transmissions for (current price £1530+vat) £1836. I would need to buy the replacement and get it fitted as this is beyond what I think I could do myself. At the time mine was replaced the independent cost was about £1800. Adding to that the cost to travel to the garage and it’s not far off the £2200. You could find a rover garage or independent more local but there int many about who want to take on the job surprisingly. I would hope by now many more garages will do the work. I would pick a recon unit over an unproven unit. If the replacement was known to be working then this may be tempting. Think I’d still go for a recon though.

So unfortunately if it were mine and needing £1836 to repair I don’t think it would survive. Some may think it’s a waste. I does too. I wuvs ma hippo I does, but reality has to be taken into consideration. Being a v6 it drinks fool quite a bit. 16.5mpg at the moment as I do local and A roads mostly. Should get better as I plan to align me wheels tomorrow. I don’t do many miles but if it were replaced by a diesel Freelander that could do 30mpg then I would save about £600 per year. Over 3 years + auto repair the saving would amount to £3300 towards the cost of a replacement Freelander. £5k saving over 5 years inc recon auto repair + fool saving. :)

Now I admit I don’t need a Freelander. I don’t live on a farm or own a pig. I would choose to own a Freelander as I like them. I take it off road to play sometimes. I don’t do many miles so I effectively pay what a normal car owner would, whilst they do a higher mileage. Running costs are higher than normal cars. I normally service and repair mine unless I feel a garage needs to do the work. I could get a late Freelander 1 td4 auto for say £6 to 8k in good condition and well looked after with service history. This would be reliable and kept long term. Or I could spend more money on a Freelander 2 at about £12k+. It would be nice to buy one 2 or 3 years old, but they seem to be about £18k+. New it £23k+. Again this would be a kept long term. The Freelander 2 seems more expensive to service and repair. The Freelander 1 would be cheaper on both counts. If buying the F2 I would have hawkeye or similar diagnostic tools to help. I’d rather go for the Freelander 2 if circumstances were ok to do so. The newer design and more fool efficient engine/auto would be a benefit. The ride is better too and in general the Freelander 2 is better than a Freelander 1. Freelander 2 has better mpg.

Holy thread revival.
I expect he has his car fixed or scrapped by now. Craig's not been on here for 4 1/2 years.
