Freelander Tyre Feathering / Sawtooth Pattern

Hi chaps,

was looking around the site for a decent pic of what tyre feathering / sawtooth patterns on the rear wheels look like and could only find one - which still didn't help me much

Anyone got a pic of this, in easily visible form? Or is able to describe exactly what to look out for? (ie inside edge or outside edge etc)

if you mean the ones of the Slitty then yes....if those were yours

If the tread is smooth in one direction, but jagged in the other you have what is called a "saw-tooth" wear pattern

this can be either across the tyre or, more usual around the tyre and can be on the inside (as mine) the outside or all across the tyre.

rub your hand across tyre to see if it is mooth one way rough the other ,

Call a dealer and ask them as i think its a fault caused by the rear diff not fully sure. my old man had a problem like it and Land Rover knew all about it and changed the rear diff i think and it solved it.

no it aint - it can be caused by all sorts of things - including the rear diff, VCU and just not rotating the tyres.

is also syptom of knackered vcu

I have some saw tooth around the outer section, my VCU, rear diff and IRD are all spot on.


all down to camber setup and tyre wall, Goodyear wranglers suffer badly

hi guys im a tyre fitter so i see this a lot, also my brother has had a freelander td4 for about 18 months and had this problem,
its quite simple but costly, it is the propshaft knackered (well the centre bit, the big round bit), a new one will set you back around 400-500quid but you can pick up good second hand ones for around £250, or if you are not using 4wd (offroad) you can simply take off the propshaft (so it is 2wd) and it will add around 20% to your fuel ecomony plus they actually drive better lol

thanks for all the answers, i had a look today and didn't notice anything similar on either of my wheels, but at least i know what to look out for now.
