oh thats really helpful! :p

Anyway, this is my 4th freelander :D :D

And before you say it, there was nothing wrong with the other 3, they've just got newer as i've gone along ;)

2.0 Di 5 door (underpowered)
1.8 XE 3 door (nice in the summer!)
1.8 XE 5 door (kids)
2.0 TD4 5 door (economy)

My problem is i've taken my Freelander TD4 2002 to an independant Land Rover Garage cause it won't start.
It turns over but won't BITE!
Sounds like it could be the camshaft position sensor which is only used when starting ie tells ECU where camshaft is in relation to crankshaft and isn't needed when the engine starts.

thanks for the thought, but its the alarm ECU thats gone wrong, the problem at the moment is getting Land Rover to supply one, into the 5th week now:(

I doubt very much its the ews (alarm) ecu, one things for sure, if this was faulty, the engine wont CRANK, yours does, all it does is sent a coded signal to the engine ecu, the engine ecu does the rest.

I reckon you have a fuel pump fault, yes they have known to pack up just by turning the engine off!

If I was working on your car and it came up with an immobiliser fault but cranks, I'd just clear the fault codes, try to start and see what else comes up. Sometimes they flag immobiliser sync faults but everythings fine, low battery voltage can bring this fault up.

To rule out the EWS, they could take and EWS and engine ecu from another vehicle and try that rather that wait weeks for a part that probably wont fix it.

As for what to do, well I'd be very suprised if an EWS will fix this, all I can say is don't let them fob you off with stuff like "we fitted the alarm ecu but there is another fault now...............". They'll try and cover their backs for wrong diagnosis to cover the time they've spent on it, don't let them rip you off by fitting bits you don't need.

SO, six and half weeks in.
Today the garage contacted me to say they'd got past the immobilser ecu, they've updated it and are now able to read the actual faults although they don't know how long it will stay cleared for and still can't get a date for the new one's arrival from Germany.
An injector has failed!
They recommend changing the 4.

how many miles has it done ? Mine had exactly the same problem (injector 2 failed, excessive leak back) on the face of it, it is a whole heap more money to have all 4 refurbished/changed, but how much time and aggravation if another one goes in a few months. My own view was it was worth getting all 4 done at once.

Good luck whatever you choose.

been reading this thread, and really sounds like you need to get the car to someone who knows what they are doing ,

first of all ,,if the engine starts with easy start its most likley a fuel issue? ie
1, lack of fuel or pressure ,,check , pumps , filter, injectors, fuel pressure sensor
2, dirty injectors will cause poor starting and poor running , always difficult to diagnose a problem without actually there

i wouldnt change all 4 injectors, they are too expensive at £190 each , i recently changed a faulty one and the engine is now running great

good luck

Its done 62000 miles and been serviced by Land Rover. I put Injector cleaner in about 6 months ago. Decided to get all 4 done, as you said its not worth the aggrevation or labour cost if another goes!

Got it back today, exactly 7 weeks after it went in! Just pleased to have it home, i've really missed my Landy !:D

Thanks everyone for your advice and suggestions since i started this thread. Will keep you updated, cheers ;)

mixed feelings about injector cleaner (redex). I used to put it in every 5 tanks or so, no problems.

when I had the injector problem, the mechanic at the garage said it was a mixed bag, whilst keeping the injectors clean, it might cause the engine to become reliant on it, masking other running problems.

think it's better to spend the money changing fuel filters more often.....

glad you've got her back, missed mine like f**k when it was away, using the train or the wife's car for work was like torture.

think you might be right, got a bottle here at the mo but not sure whether to use it in a few months or not now?!

know how you felt, i was exactly the same ;)

just be aware that the injectors on the td4 are prone to fouling,,, they can get carbon build up on the tips,
depending on the type of driving you do , i belive this engine needs good long runs to keep the injectors clean, otherwise use some cleaner on a regular basis ,or you run the risk of fouling, and they are not cheap and a nightmare to replace ,,,

have just had the 4 changed, so understand the cost involved.
what would you call on a regular basis, 3 months?
unfortunately most of my driving is to work (7 miles) with a longer run once maybe twice a week! ???

Had the same prob with my freelander 2002 TD4 in the weekend. I was waiting in the car to collect daughter's friend and fiddling with radio, and ignition (on again off again), and when I went to start up the truck it took three times to start, then died after 10 feet.

Thought fuel filter, fuel pump (had problems with this before) - but getting fuel, tried fuel cut off switch reset. Then thought about alarm tripping, fuel cut off, and that system being run by a computer. So then thought "first thing you do when computer freezes - turn it off then turn it on again". So disconnected battery, left it a couple of minutes, reconnected again. Then put alarm code in through radio. Tried to start car and it went first time! No problems since.

I must have just tripped the alarm, diesel cut off, and the system froze, just like a computer. Worth a try while you are stuck on the side of the road waiting for assistance.

freelander was working fine in the morning then went to start her in middle of the day and she wouldnt start. Only way was to let her run down the hill, (would not start with jump start), she would then run as smooth as normally but if you turn her off she wont start unless you try with her going down hill. Garage dont know the problem, came up with immobliser on comp but they cleared that. Have tried with a different key, makes no difference. Has anybody got any ideas my boyfriend is stumped Thanks

Hi the immobiliser fault code gets flagged in my experience when the car is repeatedly cranked with no start.

I would ask garage to monitor low fuel pressure and check cam sensor.

Is the low pressure pump running?
