Morning all,
Could I have some advice please? I'm suspecting/hoping my issue is due to the glow plugs needing replaced on my Freelander 1 TD4 and nothing more serious..

I'm having trouble when starting which is followed by a large plooms of smoke. My way around it is to turn the key to accessories, wait for the dashboard lights to go off and then repeat it two more times. The car then starts. There's a lot of white smoke and the engine doesn't idle too smoothly for the next few minutes. Any suggestions please?

In order of effort:
  • Check your injectors, 1+ might be pulling more diesel than it should
  • Clean off the fuel rail pressure sensors, mine had a big buildup of oxide meaning it couldn't read correctly - it kept misfiring, thinking there was not enough or more than enough fuel at regular intervals (Not idling smoothly)
  • Run some redex diesel system cleaner through it, largely available at supermarkets. (White plume, may help but unlikely to completely bust the problem)
  • Post under the freelander section where all the enlightened minds hang out
Best of luck - I know one of my injectors is having an off day and I suspect that's why mine also starts up in a plume; just to check, your cloud disperses after it gets warm?

Thanks very much Bounty. The smoke does disperse once I've driven for five or ten minutes. I did use the Redex treatment but no difference. I'll look into your suggestions. Thanks.
