Hi

Ive read a few fuel pump problems on this site and im non the wiser really

I was driving to work last week, and the car just shut down, lost power steering and power brakes etc, and wouldn't start again, a few weeks prior to this happening I noticed maybe twice that it kind of juddered but then carried on as normal.

My friend who has been a mechanic for some 30 years has been looking at it for me, but unfortunately seems to be clutching at straws at the moment.

The fuel pump - not sure if high pressure one - found behind driver side wheel arch seemed to be struggling, I purchased a new one, and this one doesn't seem to be working at all.

The fuel pump inside the tank, doesn't seem to have an electrical feed to it other than to the fuel gauge, and my friend wonders how this can be called a pump if it doesn't actually contain a pump.

Is there any more pumps anywhere under the bonnet, or is it just the pump behind the wheel arch and the one inside the petrol tank.

Any other ideas what my problem might be.

No engine lights etc lit.

Thanks

Pete

You will only have the one Low pressure pump under the right rear arch. There is no in-tank pump when you have the under arch version.

He needs to explore why this new pump isn't running using a multimeter. It will only have a live feed for approximately 1 minute after ignition on before it times out if engine is not running.

Hi Chaser

Thats amazing info, thanks very much, I will get back on here in a few days after another attempt

Thanks

Pete

Hi Pete,

I don't know where you got the impression that there was an in-tank pump as well as the under wheel arch one, but never mind.

Chaser, as usual, is correct.

Did you change the fuel filter which is in the same housing as the fuel pump?

Are you saying the new pump is not running at all, or is it running but the car not starting?

Did you go through the correct procedure for the first start of a new pump which is necessary to get all the air out of the lines?

It is a self bleeding pump, but the method is to switch on ignition without trying to start - you should hear the pump buzz and perhaps some 'gurgling' of air/fuel.

After a minute or so the pump stops - as Chaser said.

You need to go through the switching on ignition without starting procedure maybe 3 or 4 times - and then try a start as normal - it may 'hiccup' a little but it will run and get rid of all the air after a bit.

Hi Singvogel and Chaser

Thanks very much, pump and filter now fitted, and the car is running

Wow, your info has been amazing

That bit on letting the pump run for 3 or 4 times was vital

Thanks very much again, one happy landy owner

Kind regards

Pete

That's great Pete,

I'm happy you're fixed now, and all's well.

Thanks too for coming back and letting us know that our suggestions were good ones. We often don't know the final outcome.

Enjoy. :)
