Thanks guys plenty of info to think about, not a problem getting in the car the doors are open and it is parked in a secure garage.
Think the first thing is to obtain a key, was told last night the remote fob may have been found so this could mean i only need the key and obviously the key programming, as for my location i am located in Lancashire North west thanks guys for all the help and advice.

You should also check what type of key/fob the car has/had. My '99 car has the older separate fob where the key is simply a key and all the electronics are in a separate fob. They changed at some point where the electronics were built into the key.

The chap i spoke to from the link that you gave me said the key as a transponder and there fore needs to be programmed to the car also the fob for unlocking the doors etc will also need to be programed.
Hopefully i think the fob for opening the doors may have turned up, that may save a little.

Up date i have now sourced the remote fob so doors can be opened and locked.
Back window as come down now i have put a fully charged battery on, must be a reset procedure but don't think i will be able to do that without the key, so just taped it up for now.
Spoke to a auto lock smith and for around £70 he will supply key program it to the module but i would have to send him the ignition barrel and the module from behind the stereo/air con dials. He does seem a nice block and knows what he is on about.
That seems the best fix offer i have had up to now, what do you guys think. Can not think of a easier way.

I am right in thinking there is some sort of transponder to knock off the immobilizer in the key as well, that also needs programming to the system and the fob just opens the doors and disarms the alarm ?

I got a new key with a transponder from Land Rover for about 90 quid plus they wanted an extra 60 odd quid to programme it to the car, will depend on the model year whether the key will come already to use or whether they will need to do the extra programming, my advice is to contact a Land Rover dealer with your car details, not the cheapest option but at least they do work correctly.

Update in case any body else loses their keys. Finally got the lost keys sorted, found a fellow his company his remote keys could not have been more helpful.
He told me if i removed the ignition barrel and the module behind the air con unit ,send it to him he could cut keys and program them to module.
Sent the 2 parts to him, true to his word he sent them back in a couple of days, i refitted ignition barrel and module.
Started first time, happy days or so i thought till i put it in reverse, goes in ok but when i start to release clutch it wants to throw it out of reverse gear if you force it to stay in reverse it will grind really bad, if i slightly release clutch i can get it to go backwards without grinding all be it very slow, but if i try to reverse over as much as a little stone it wont have it, as soon as i release clutch to the biting point the grinding starts !!!!!!!!!!!
Any body any ideas other than replacement gear box, here's hoping.
Will start a new post with this problem.

it sounds as though you need a new clutch also the early freelanders need the engine revs down and at a standstill but not in you case before they go into reverse gear properly .

Sorry about the clutch/gearbox issue, maybe just sticky having not been used for a while but great news about the key. Can you tell us who you sent it to. No harm in sharing details about a good guy.
