I'm Getting a knock/click sound coming from the rear of my 2002 freelander 1, I changed the centre rear diff bush a few months ago and that sorted out the first knock sound. Now It makes a click/slingshot sound randomly when reversing and occasionally in 1st. It's gradually happening more often, could it be that now the centre rear diff bush has been changed its putting more pressure on the other two rear bushes? Anyone else have a similar experience? Thanks

I noticed today it seems to knock/click when reversing up or down slight hills, also the vehicle was used to tow caravans in the past so I'm not sure what sort of consumable parts that would wear? The vehicle has 109k on the clock

Could be VCU support bearings, do a search there's tons of info :). Tell us a bit about your car and what you do in it, helps us help you if we know roughly what you're about :).

Will.

The guy who owned it before had a caravan, but I don't use it for any towing just a taxi for the little boy and misus lol. I've only owned it for a few months and I'm really happy with it! Apart from the knock and a few niggles. I noticed today it knocks just as I release the clutch fully, also sounds like its coming from the rear diff.

If it happens when you operate the clucth, ask your mechanic to check the IRD mounting brackets are tight and also check the IRD mount bush for wear. Whenever you engage the clutch there is windup and if the bush is worn and/or brackets loose then the IRD and transfer box will jump around. Got mine sorted for £20 and it's perfect now.

The rubber bushes in these things are a shower of ****e.

It'll possibly be your diff mounts .Another possibility that used to be suggested here was a bolt on the rear subframe would pull through the floor  .

the only time the bolts are pulled throught the floor is when they have not been tightend properly after renewing the centre bush
I think you'll find that Land Rover used the wrong sized nuts and bolts on the production line for a few months.

This caused the problem.

I changed the remaining two rear diff bushes this morning but that's not solved the knock, I checked all the subframe to chassis bolting points and I can't see any cracks/rust

My dads had a listen to it and thinks it could be something to do with the ird, it sounds like A mechanical/cog slipping, although it sounds like its coming from the centre of the car

A good test is to lift up the bonnet and then look at how much the enhgine moves when a lovely assistant engages the clutch a bit for you. If the engine and IRD jumps around excessively then it's the mount and or bush.

I do not know about that freelaner but I do know it happened to mine I left a so called profesional to do it and he did not tighten the bolts up the the pacific torq and next thing one nut being pulled through so I did it my self droped the sub frame then welded the nut up and then put everything back you are suposed to use new bolts which I did and bingo no more clicks

My mechanic had a look today he thinks it could be the nsr hub, sounds like its winding up/ clicking then bang. Seems to only be happening right hand full lock, I'm thinking the springs in the hub? Also the handbrakes not tight so this could possibly be related.
