i will find out when i get home tonight and let you know! i was under the impression the maf only controlled the egr on the l-series!

aah, you could be right there. Check its effect anyway though, also check connections to needle lift sensor, throttle position sensor and crank sensor. Clutching at straws now I'm afraid, it's about all you can do apart from as I said, get an opinion from the pump supplier. They may agree with mtechs view on initial timing or some other known fault.

Don't assume that there are no fault codes stored just because the MIL is out.

You need to undo the 4 bolts on the cam pulley, FIP end of engine, and tweak the pulley about 1-2mm in a clockwise direction as your looking at the pulley. Torque them up to 25nm and run it up. If slightly worse undo again and move to original position and then 1-2mm in the anticlockwise position.
Don’t look past your original fault. Engine timing – Hunting.

Yep it's your call. looking at the positives you've fitted the pump correctly as per manufacturer instructions, double checked you're work, checked for stored fault codes and the vehicle had a stable idle with the original pump.

Do you feel that the diesel shop would be interested in helping/advising if you described the problem to them. Give 'em a call.
If they're not interested you've nothing to loose and possibly all to gain by shifting the timing. Mtech's confident it'll cure it, it's just a route i've never had to go down!
:)

im gonna recheck and retorque all settings this weekend, just to double double check settings, not sure whether pump supplier will be able to help, BUT i will try after i am 110% confident that what i have done is correct. i will try tweaking as per described above also. thanks for all your advice mtech and chaser, and i'll let you know the results over the weekend.

It's their reputation at stake don't you think. I don't know if others agree but I'm of the opinion their work should be guaranteed and should be able to run straight out of the box.

Good luck...

just a thought, did you use a torque wrench (25nm) anti-clockwise in the square hole on the camshaft gear when tightening the four bolts, to achieve the final belt tension? If not then when you recheck with the timing pins they may not slide in easy. apparently this is critical for correct timing..

i dont have a wrench that does that range! oops! my small one goes up to 20nm, and my big one has a minimum of 40nm, i just did it to what i thought was correct! havent had chanc`e to look at it today, but will be doing in the morning! thanks again!

right, i've messed about with the timing, and it runs worse or not at all in any other position, soooo im guessing the timing is ok!

just had a thought, and is there any way of adjusting the idle speed, its as if it is trying to idle too slow, and catching itself???

I doubt it but if it's possible (i'm not LR trained) I imagine it's done via Testbook.

I think your ****ing in the wind now and really do need to speak to injection specialist and ask what would make you idle unstable with this pump when it wasn't with the original.

Totally agree. That’s great that you ruled out the timing but bad it didn’t improve. For the time it takes to adjust the pump you have safely ruled it out. The only problem now is – what way forward.
I have had pumps come back where the timing has been a Knats dick out and I have just put it down to the fact that they are not new units.
The problem with all recon units and used units is that element of, is it perfect and is it causing this issue.
Have you taken it for a good run since you have fitted the pump to let everything settle in and the lift needle to sort itself out.

well, im officially a dumb-ass! after spending days pondering and re checking eveything i had done, i failed to recheck the fuel line banjo on the low pressure side. i hadnt nipped it up properly! DOH, thanks for all your input nonetheless guys!
