Freelander Gearbox Crunch

Hi all
We have a 1999 Freelander XDI, everytime we put it into reverse we get an cruuuuunching noise, also sometimes its also hard to get into 1st gear, we have to double the clutch, is this a serious/expensive problem?

it could be one of a number of things: the clutch arm starting to seize in the gearbox casing, the clutch hydraulic bracket on the gearbox broken,lazy clutch hydraulics or maybe the clutch is starting to wear and not clear, all the other gears will select ok as the car will be moving . i had the same issue on my 1800 petrol freelander and it was the release bearing had compressed by 1-2mm causing the clutch to not clear enough

Just looked at your website, its a pity you are so far away from me otherwise I would have given it to you to sort out, I am in Selsey near Chichester....

My reverse gear always crunches if I don't wait a good few seconds before selecting it.

Try putting it in summit like 4th or 5th before putting it into reverse.
