 I've had conflicting advice on wether or not i can run a freelander td4 2002 on bio diesel, does any body know if i can or not? or has anyone tried and regretted it or tried it with no probs?
Any advice would be a help, like every one i want to cut my motoring costs but don't wanna do any lasting or expensive damage. The disco is running fine on it and would love to trim the fuel cost on the freelander.
Thanks:)

The TD4 drivers handbook says "WARNING This vehicle is NOT compatible with 'Bio-diesel' fuel. So it does`nt look like .

Hi
i actually know a fair bit about bio diesel as my husband works for haulage firms and used to make it.
the first thing to consider is whether the car is under any warranty. if so you need to check with whoever provides that cover. if as above it says don't do it, then don't.
if it's not, and you want to give it a go there are a few points you need to consider.
the bio diesel will clean any crap out of your fuel system, so your filter will need changing regularly to start with. also any rubber fuel pipes need changing for silicon otherwise it eats away at them and you'll end up with half your tank of cheaper fuel ****ing out of a return pipe as you drive along.
lots of people say it gives higher mpg, the company did find that and ran their new iveco fleet happily on it. (til the director bought himself a house, bankrupted business and left us all to starve meaning insolvency practitioners sold off the trucks and equipment), but i digress.
you need to buy it from someone reputable and check how they process it, what percentage of unprocessed oil they add etc. 'wet' processing with chemicals makes the cleanest diesel and especially as a first time use in your engine don't go for any more than 10% unreacted.
the diesel at the pump is now about 5-10% bio now mixed in as some government target bollocks says so. some use more.
i guess the only thing to do is look at your options and weigh them up.

this is a list of bio fuel companies, i'd use one of these rather than someone using dubious equipment in their garden shed:p
hope this helps a bit

So, silicon fuel pipes
change filter regularly
quality bio
mix it with diesel inc % slowly on each fill

Sounds ok, i've been told there could be a prob with the high pressure fuel pump?? (didn't even know it had one)

Cheers Sarah:):)

I've looked into this before and prior to researching about it, I was very keen. It is a bad idea. It seems that it's not really a good idea with any common rail diesel engine.

Couldn't find anything in the manual about bio, if i had i would still have asked:).

Heard before that common rail diesels aren't up for bio but someone has told me its fine. I want someone else to try it before i do LOL:D:D

People have, and it causes problems.

Do a search, there's lots about it. I even asked the same question awhile back.

Diesel Models

Fuel Specification: Use diesel or automotive gas oil (AGO) to EN590

Warning: ONLY use diesel fuel. DO NOT use other fuels (kerosene, petrol or alcohol for example) as damage to engine components will occur.

Warning: This vehicle is NOT compatible with 'Bio-diesel' fuel.

dont do it.Sarahfoxy has the only post not saying dont do it and its a post about itai lorries.

We have also run to name but a few, VW Phaeton and Eos (both their books said don't do it, but said f**k it and they go ok) Citroen berlingo, Merc Sprinters, Ford Mondeo, Escort and Ranger, Peugeot 306, and can't remeber what else. I'm not saying do it or don't just giving advice on something i've got a bit of experience with:eek:
And of course the disco's, but am reliably informed that you could **** in the fuel tank and it would carry on regardless!lol

I just checked your profile and saw this:

"Occupation
Wife, Mother, Land Rover wrecker!"

OK OK I didn't look very well:doh::doh: (or at all)

I bet the same advice is in the disco manual tho:)

But of course! only in an offroading capacity tho:D

Dean went out in his disco, first time laning and playing in his, with the intention and desire if doing damage. apart from losing his CB aerial, having roofrack removed by a tree and losing his boot (in deep peat whilst helping to rescue an 'oops! just slipped off the road' type) he had been unsucessful.
within 10min of me driving on the paysite i'd smashed a rear light, and a rogue branch caved in the rear sky light. my excuse being it was my first time driving his car, and while it looks like sally, it feels nothing alike and doesn't turn as i expected!lol
got lots of cheers from the other blokes tho! i'm the only woman in the club who does drive, so they tend to either treat me as a foreign species or are just amazed at how muddy and filthy i get in the name of fun!:clap2:

at least i'm honest, and doing damage is a hazard of the laning, playday experience.
:focus:

i used to run my dads citroen berlingo on that stuff at the ratio of 50/50 and never had a problem with it apart from when it was running sat at the lights for instance it smelled like the local chippy but the fuel filter needed changeing evry couple of months
regards john

If i try it and it goes badly wrong, whats the likely outcome and what the worst case scenario??:whoosh::smash::boom::boom:

Worst case scenario:

Engine f*cked.

The TD4 engine is one of few good things about the Freelander. Don't f*ck with it.
