freelander 1 wing mirror removal/repair

Hi, just wondered if anybody has had any experience of replacing or repairing wing mirrors. Basically my dilemma is that my mirror has been hit by a car or kicked- its knocked the mirror right back and now it just swings loose. This next bit isn't easy to explain but i'll give it a go... I've removed a plastic cap at the bottom of the mirror to reveal a big spring and a weird washer type thing. I think the weird washer thing needs to push back up compressing the spring and clipping into place to fix. I can't get the pressure i need on the spring with the mirror on the car so how do i get it off. Has anyone had similar and succeeded in fixing the mirror if so how? or should i give up and get a new mirror?

Its an electric mirror - electric glass mover but not electric fold in type. Freelander TD4 5 door by way. 03 plate.

I've just done mine as it had some vertical movement due to being hit (I think) by someone.
Remove, with care, the inner cover off the inside of the door. It comes off from the top first and is attached with a little orange plastic push-in clip that will break easily.
Disconnect the two electrical connectors (the small one just unplugs and the large one has a securing catch)
Remove three large hex-drive bolts and one small phillips-headed screw and the whole mirror assembly will come off.
I removed the black plastic plug off the bottom and was presented with four tiny screws, two of which had pulled through the plastic. I carefully shaped two steel washers and re-fitted, Solid as a rock.
Re-fitting is just a reversal of above.

Thanks for this post it was very helpful, i was ready to just replace the unit as mine was drooping and suffering from the same vertical movement and 2 of the screws had been pulled through.
I can further ad to this post that this repair can be carried out with the door mirror still on the car.
Just remove the 3cm round plastic plug/cover underneath the mirror unit, using a T10 torx bit, unscrew the screws that have pulled through and if you now fit an M5 washer over them and screw them back while supporting the mirror in place it's fixed, a 5 minute job at most and if you use the M5 washers you won't need to modify them as they just fit.
