My son's Freelander auto has lost it's ability to reverse... the gear select seems to work, theres some mechanics under the bonnet (which I havent seen but he and a mate have) and they seem to work fine, reverse light comes on etc etc.

When R is selected theres a small clunk and all SEEMS fine, but when you add the gas it's as if the thing is in neutral. My guess is that some rather essential connecting cog is not engaging...but what that is and how to fix I have no idea.

Any thoughts?

Edit....just found other threads on this about brake bands...I will check.

When did it have its last fluid change as it is essential that it is done every 60,000 miles if you do not know what you are doing then take it somewhere ,because undoing the wrong bolt will mean a gear box out to put it back together again ,first you could check the fluid it means getting the gear box warm by running it , then going through all the gears while it is standing then. Check the fluid aft a couple on minutes hope this helps

Sounds like the reverse brake band has worn out. It's a gearbox strip down to replace it, but the part isn't that expensive.

Has he just changed the fluid in the box? There is a bolt that looks like the drain or fill bolt - but isn't! If its removed, even when put back in, you will lose reverse gear.

Woops, as described by TW!
