I have a Freelander 1 1.8 petrol with LPG conversion. It's on an 04 plate.
It has developed an annoying fault and I wondered if anyone could help me with it.
I put a new battery on the car as it failed to start several times. The garage said it was the battery which I think was correct.
However it still won't start. I called out the AA, they said the problem was the starter relay which I changed but again this morning the car failed to start.
The ignition comes on but the starter motor doesn't activate.

Common problem. It'll be the starter solenoid contacters burnt. You can get replacement solenoids for the 1.8 http://m.ebay.co.uk/itm/FREELANDER-...3Aa6e0290d15d0a9c4a91e07c8fffd2c04%7Ciid%3A13
Easy to fix, if you can do basic maintenance. ;)

When it fails to crank is there an light that comes on on the dash? Its the light that blinks when the car is locked. If it is lit that means the car/engine is immobilised. I would have thought someone would already have picked up on that, but worth asking.

I thought of that, but didn't know how to check until I saw your post. I've just checked and the light goes out when the car is unlocked.

If when you try to crank it, you just get a click from under the bonnet. Then it's the starter solenoid as I've already mentioned. ;)

It will probably be as Nodge says the starter motor/solenoid.

When you unlock the door the light stops flashing and goes out, you then put the key in and turn it - at this point the light either stays off (and the car/engine is not immobilised) or it then comes back on solid, then it is immobilised - it is not the same as unlocking the car... the key will pick up a field from the barrel and send an immobiliser code which then enables the engine and cranking (that's sort of how it works).

I see what you are saying. The immobiliser light goes out when the car is unlocked using the remote zapper. When the key is turned to start the car the starter motor does not activate. A small click can be heard but I think that is the fuel pump as it seems to come from the drivers side of the engine compartment.
(Just a small note, I don't have a transponder in my key. The transponder is taped to the key barrel. The original key broke and a proper replacement was very expensive.)
The AA man who came yesterday was of the opinion the problem was the relay under the bonnet. He decided that because he took the relay out, put it back in HEY HO! the car started. I got a replacement and had no further problems yesterday. However this morning it wouldn't start.
I know the type of clicking that you are referring to and the starter solenoid being a fairly heafty item has quite an audible click. But I think the problem is in that area so I'm in the process of replacing it. Thank you for your advice.
