Freelander 1 TD4 2005 died without a cough or splutter going down the bypass. The only warning icon to come up was the trailer lights and that is now only coming up with hazards on. Recently fitted lift pump in wheel arch and that is working as it should do(buzzes for a minute and turns off when pressure has built up). The injector pump is a bit leaky on occasions and I fitted a new fuel pressure sensor/solenoid to it a few months ago thinking that was where the leak was coming from, but turned out to be higher up the injector pump body. Do these Bosch injector pumps die a sudden death or is it a sensor? Going to give it a whiff of Easy Start tomorrow to check that it fires. Header tank full of coolant,so not expecting head gasket issues.

Do these Bosch injector pumps die a sudden death

they can do ..
mine did .. and were an obvious blown seal ..
weren't much of a warning either .. no small prev. leaks or 'owt

Sounds like you need to remove the HPFP give it a service and add new seals, i recently got round to sorting out some i had in the shed.

How tricky is that to do? I quite fancy sourcing a 2nd hand pump and refurbing it to have in my spares box.

It's not much tricky but you need to be meticulous in the cleaning department, make sure you use a clean area, mark and make sure you put each chamber back where it came from, so one chamber at a time might be best, otherwise mark each one a then go from there,

add a grommet to stop anything from getting into the chambers, as you go, also make sure mating surface are clean from rust etc,

occasionally the from seal may need changing so double check that too.

Another thing to make sure it that the piston spring is not stuck and is free to move, i have had to free a few in the past.

great care must be taken with the metal seal, it as to be inserted the right way round other wise it will be crushed when you re-fit the chamber lid, it as a chamfered edge which must face inwards.

Once you have replaced all the seals and you fit each lid, when you come to fit the last one add some clean diesel in to the chamber pot before fitting the last lid, this then lubricates the pump inside.

Do the regulator at the same time.

adding all three seals.

i prefer to spray paint the ones i have serviced after, it's not really needed but it's how i work personally.

Turned out to be the plug on the new fuel pump regulator(back of injector pump) that I had fitted a few months ago, had come off---it had been bloody awkward to fit and not gone on all the way.

Same here. Mine let go with no warning and left me on the side of the road, with a pool of fuel under the car
